Anime Recommendations and Open Thread

(One-Punch Hero t-shirt on sale at the NeatoShop)

Every few months, I write about good anime series that I've seen and ask you for your recommendations. My last such post was only two months ago, but there has been so much excellent new anime this spring season that I have no fewer than six exciting shows to tell you about.

It hasn't gotten a lot of attention from fans this season, but I think that Kuromukuro is a sleeper hit. It's a fast-paced action series with charming characters and engaging dialogue. Kuromukuro tells the story of a 450-year old samurai who awakens from suspended animation. He's confused about the modern world of 21st Century Japan, but he instantly recognizes the aliens who invade the Earth. They're the "demons" that wiped out his clan long ago.

"Miracle" as Blind Woman Recovers Sight from 21 Years of Blindness after Unrelated Spinal Surgery

(Photo: ABC News)

21 years ago, Mary Ann Franco of Okeechobee, Florida lost her eyesight in a car accident. More recently, she fell and needed spinal surgery. When she woke up, she found that she could see again. The first thing that she noticed was a nurse wearing purple. KMBZ News reports:

“Lady, you with all that purple on you, give me something for pain."

She said her niece asked her, “What did you say, Mary?’”

And that’s when she realized she could see again... in color. Before her car accident, Franco said she was color-blind, but isn't anymore.

“Out the window, I could see the trees,” she told WPBF-TV. “I could see the houses and stuff.”

How did it happen? It's mostly likely that Franco's blindness was caused by a kinked nerve, which the doctor unintentionally unkinked during the spinal surgery:

Her neurosurgeon, Dr. John Afshar, believes the car accident may have kinked an artery in her spine, restricting blood flow to the part of her brain that controls vision. He told WPBF-TV he may have unwittingly unkinked the artery when he performed her spinal surgery.

Little Girl Born without Hands Wins National Handwriting Competition

(Photos: Greenbriar Christian Academy)

7-year old Anaya Ellick of Chesapeake, Virginia executed perfect penmanship in a national competition called the Nicholas Maxim Award. This was an incredible feat, considering that she doesn't have hands.

It doesn't surprise anyone who knows her. Anaya has been determined from infancy to not let her disability impede her goals. The Virginia Pilot reports:

But when Anaya was only a few days old, she was already making an impression. She couldn’t hold a pacifier, but she was keeping it in her mouth by cupping it there with one arm.

While still a baby, she figured out how to hold a fork to eat and how to build with blocks.

“She helped me be comfortable with it,” Middleton said.

From an early age, Anaya got the message from her family that she could do anything. But it hasn’t been that simple. She is fiercely independent, apt to reject offers for help. In her first few years, she grew frustrated when she wasn’t able to complete a task.

For Sale on Craigslist: Working Guillotine

Mothers' Day is this Sunday. You didn't forget that, did you? If you do, your mother will certainly never forget it.

Be prepared. Give your mom the best possible gift for the occasion: a guillotine.

NBC 29 reports that Pat and Alex Pichl of Englewood, Florida are parting with their completely functional and stylish guillotine. They call it the "Best No [Trespassing] Sign." It sits in their yard as a warning to intruders. But now they're moving and don't have room for it anymore.

The chopper is a mere $500, which, I can tell you, is quite affordable for the guillotine hobbyist. All it needs is a bit of floral decoration to give it a festive look. Then it's ready for presentation on Sunday.

(Image: Kronenbourg 1664)

Kronenbourg 1664, a French beer brand from Alsace, is launching a pop-up bar in London called Bar D'Alsace-tian. It will, appropriately, be staffed by Alsatian dogs. UPI reports:

"We're absolutely delighted to be opening the doors on the world's first bar staffed by dogs," Kronenbourg 1664 brand director Ifeoma Dozie said. "It provides customers with a truly unique experience and is the ideal way for us to bring the 'Alsace-tians' to Kronenbourg fans."

Blender with a Chainsaw Engine

For the most extreme margaritas in town, you need a bit more than a blender. Instructables member Mike Warren has brought his A-game with this 37-horsepower blender. He controls it with the throttle and kill switch off a motorcycle mounted onto a pair of handlebars. It combines the great American traditions of alcohol and chainsaws. You can find detailed instructions and a demonstration video here.

World's Longest Insect Discovered

(Photo: News.cn)

At over 2 feet, 4 inches long, this newly-discovered stick insect is the largest known one in the world. A researcher named Zhao Li found it by a mountain road in southern China. Xinhua quotes him:

"I was collecting insects on a 1,200-meter-tall mountain in Guangxi's Liuzhou City on the night of Aug. 16, 2014, when a dark shadow appeared in the distance, which looked like a tree twig," Zhao recalled. "As I went near, I was shocked to find the huge insect's legs were as long as its body."

Zhao took it back to his museum. There, it laid six eggs. The smallest of the hatchlings grew to over 10 inches long.

How to Light a Match with a Rubber Band

Here's a handy trick that could save your life someday. Mr. Gear wrapped a rubber band around two matches, knotted around one and slipped over the other. He applied pressure to the striking match, rubbing the phosphorus coating off with the rubber, thus igniting it.

Car of Singing, Dancing Lobsters and Fish

Photo: Sashimi Tabernacle Choir)

This wondrous concert on wheels is the Sashimi Tabernacle Choir. In 2001, Richard Carter and John Schroeter built this art car that is covered with over 250 remote-controlled animatronic lobsters, bass, and other fish. On command, it plays music, which the sea creatures dance to.

That's a lot to coordinate, so there's also a lobster conductor (with a baton) and a fish song leader. It rocks to the beat, although that requires a bit of manual input.

This Soccer Stadium Sits Precisely on the Equator

(Photo: Fabián Berrío)

It's called the Zerão or zero stadium. This soccer stadium is on the equator, so the name is a reference to zero degrees of latitude. One goal is in the northern hemisphere and the other is in the southern hemisphere. Seven soccer clubs call this 10,000-seat facility home.

7-Pound Breakfast Taco Is the Hangover Cure for Cinco de Mayo

(Photo: El Original)

On May 5, 1862, a Mexican army under the command of Generals Ignacio Zaragoza and Porfirio Diaz defeated a French army at the Battle of Puebla, temporarily halting the French invasion of Mexico. Consequently, Americans drink tequila on May 5 every year.

If you drink too much tequila, then El Original, a Tex-Mex restaurant in New York City, offers this breakfast taco as a hangover cure. It's called the Seis de Mayo. This whopping 7-pound taco contains a dozen eggs, a pound of sausage, a pound of bacon, and a pound of peppers and onions. It costs $50.
