New Tattoo Ink Disappears after a Year

Are you certain that you'll have no ragrets about this decision? Tattooing is permanent unless you want to undergo expensive laser treatments.

Just to be safe, it may be worth getting yourself inked in a new type of disappearing ink. A company called Ephemeral has developed ink that breaks down after a year. Developer Anthony Lam explained to TechCrunch how it works:

“Tattoo inks today are permanent because of the fact that the dye molecules are too big for your body’s immune system to take away,” explains co-founder Anthony Lam. “By using smaller molecules, we’ve encapsulated them inside this spherical structure that’s big enough that your immune system doesn’t take it away. But when you remove it, it essentially eats away one of the components and the dye molecules are flushed out.”

The company is currently testing the ink on pigs to make sure that it works. It hopes to price the ink at $50-100 for an average sized tattoo.

10-Year Old Girls Breaks National Record by Doing 2,110 Sit-Ups in 90 Minutes

How many sit-ups could you do in an hour and a half? How about 10 minutes? Or just until your body gave out?

Kayleigh Bass of Kansas City, Missouri is a high-endurance sit-up producing machine. At only 10 years old, she completed 2,110 of them in 90 minutes, smashing the previous record of 2001 sit-ups. Even though she almost threw up, Kayleigh kept going until she completed this incredible goal for Project Fit America, a non-profit organization that promotes physical fitness. Fox 4 Kansas City reports:

“It’s a mind thing. If you think about it, you can do it and you’ll make it,” Kyleigh said.

Kyleigh was already on the board with 800 sit-ups but she wanted to be at the very top. So P.E teacher, Bill Lentz, helped train her to reach that goal.

“I like to think I am an active person, but I’m inspired. She’s my hero and hopefully I can work out half as hard as she does,” said Lentz.

Boy Takes Cat to the Prom

And as you can see from the cat's expression, she had a wonderful time.

Imgur member caroline120006 says that her brother, Sam Steingard, took their cat, Ruby, to the prom. Unfortunately for Ruby, she was just his backup plan. He only asked her out after failing to find a human companion.

Nonetheless, she dolled up in a pink dress and sneakers that match Sam's tie. You can see more photos of them together at the Daily Mail.

Mom Turns Son's Scar into Harry Potter Lightning Bolt

What have you done to scar your child for life? Imgur member mommybrittaney hasn't done anything permanent. But when her son got a deep cut on his forehead, she made it look beautiful by adding a couple more strokes with a marker and some costuming to turn him into Harry Potter. The Today show quotes her:

He was so embarrassed about his scratch and didn't want to leave the house and be seen with it that dressing him up as Harry Potter was my first instinct.

It was a good one! Now all he has to do is wait for a letter.

This Man Just Received the First Penis Transplant in the US

(Photo: Massachusetts General Hospital)

Thomas Manning has every reason to smile. He didn't have a lot of hope after losing his penis to cancer. But after a 15-hour operation on May 8 and 9 in Boston, he now has a donor penis transplanted.

Some men might feel too embarrassed to speak out about this kind of problem. But Manning isn't holding back. The New York Times reports:

Mr. Manning welcomed questions and said he wanted to speak out publicly to help dispel the shame and stigma associated with genital cancers and injuries, and to let other men know there was hope of having normal anatomy restored.

“Don’t hide behind a rock,” he said.

This kind of operation is enormously difficult. Manning's doctors note that only 2 other penis transplants have been performed, one in China, which failed, and another in South Africa.

The primary goal of penis transplantation in the US is to help the 1,367 veterans who suffered genital injuries in Iraq or Afghanistan. The Times quotes Manning's surgeon Dr. Curtis L. Cetrulo:

Veterans are a major focus of transplant programs in the United States because suicide rates are exceptionally high in soldiers with severe damage to the genitals and urinary tract, Dr. Cetrulo said. “They’re 18- to 20-year-old guys, and they feel they have no hope of intimacy or a sexual life,” he said. “They can’t even go to the bathroom standing up.”

Given the psychological toll, he said, a penis transplant can be lifesaving.

Mini Camera Lets Blind People Read

(Photo: OrCam)

The developers of OrCam want the 280 million people around the world with significant visual impairment to be able to read printed text. So they developed a camera that fits onto a pair of glasses. When the user points at text within the camera's view, the attached computer reads it aloud into a bone conductor next to the ear.

Researchers at the University of California Davis Health System found that OrCam was highly effective in making printed text accessible to people who can't see. The Daily Mail reports:

Dr Mark Mannis and colleagues carried out research on 12 people with low vision – six men and six women with an average age of 62. [...]

After using it for a week, all of the subjects were able to carry out at least nine of the 10 items on the test and said they found it easy to use and would consider using it in their daily lives.

The authors performed a separate sub-analysis of seven patients who were using other low-vision aids and found that their performance on the test was better when using the device, as well.

Each OrCam costs about $2,500-$3,500 USD.
