The Geek Galaxy

The humorists at Bite extended the map of our solar system to include planets from science fiction. Here's one section of four. Now strictly speaking, this isn't correct because it implies that all of these planets revolve around our sun. Also, Eternia and Thundera are fairly equal in size. Other than that, it's a good set of charts.

My Little Cthulhu

I've seen Cthulhu mods of My Little Ponies, but none as good as this one by deviantART user Cehualli. She writes:

Features wings, tentacles with suckers on the face and tail, cheek fins, and a sail going down the spine. Sculpted in apoxie over wire armature, painted with metallic greens, gold, and some blue on the feet, and covered with extra-creepy glossy sculpey glaze for a very wet look.

This video remixes questionable scenes from the original Star Trek with the Neon Trees song "Animal." Thank you, Internets, for what I can never unsee.

Interactive Horror Movie

(YouTube Link)

Last Call is a German horror film in which the audience determines the storyline. At different points in the story, the protagonist calls a random audience member, who gives the terrified character advice. The plot then shifts in the direction of that advice. The above video shows how it works.

Super Mario Bros. Chess Cake

deviantART user Ana Fuji made this chocolate cake with fondant figures from Super Mario Bros.

Live-Action Battleship Yamato Trailer

(YouTube Link)

Space Battleship Yamato -- or Star Blazers, as it was known when produced in English -- was one of the first anime series to gain a strong following in the United States. The story began when the wreck of the old World War II battleship Yamato was rebuilt on the scorched ocean floor into a spaceship and then sent on a desperate mission to defeat aliens who threatened the Earth with destruction.

Well, it's been made into a live-action movie, and above video is the Japanese-language trailer.

We're off to outer space
We're leaving Mother Earth
To save the human race
Our Star Blazers

It was a really catchy theme song, wasn't it? I don't think that I've watched it since '98, but I still remember the words clearly.

Huge, Animatronic Elite (Halo) Costume

Master craftsman Peter Mander made this huge, moving Elite costume from the Halo franchise. At the link, there are several more photos as well as a video of its construction. But I chose this photo where a man is wearing only the bottom half to demonstrate the staggering size of the thing.

Unnecessary Censorship: The Terminator

(YouTube Link)

Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles gets filled with all sorts of innuendos once you start bleeping out a few carefully-selected words. YouTube user allergygal writes:

Think of it as a really warped take on The Sarah Connor Chronicles... with lots of innuendo. And no plot. Also, much silliness. Bonus: an abundance of the F-word. Hope you laugh.

A Cappella Version of The Pokémon Theme

(YouTube Link)

YouTube user daniscool99 made this a cappella version of the Pokémon theme song. I was a bit skeptical that it was truly without accompaniment, but he insists:
*ALL SOUNDS ON THIS RECORDING WERE MADE VOCALLY*

-The drum shots were transcribed and recorded shot for shot

A lot of different effects have been used on this recording. Pitch correction, yes pitch correction, was used on lots of the backup tracks - although none on the lead vocals. While I didn't necessarily care to "correct wrong pitches", I used to create a continuity and consistency of sound because I was imitating instruments. The guitar sounds have distortion and tape delays and everything has significant EQ's as well... The drums are a prime example. Also some use of pitch shifting.. no I can't sing that low lol.

In that case, this was very impressive work.

Greatest Sci Fi Newspaper Headline Ever

Tightrope walkers crossed the Han River in Korea without assistance. Get it? This appeared in an issue of The Washington Post. Very clever of the headline editor.

Goofus & Gallant/Captain America & Deadpool

Goofus and Gallant is an educational comic that has appeared in Highlights for Children since 1948. It contrasts two boys, Goofus and Gallant. Gallant has good social skills and Goofus poor.

This spoof presents Captain America as Gallant and the anti-social Deadpool as Goofus. There are three more panels at the link. I don't know who the artist is. Do you?

Boy Regains Eyesight, Thanks to Nintendo

Ben Michaels (6) has amblyopia in one eye -- a severe lazy eye. To strengthen the ailing eye, his doctor prescribed two hours of video games a day:

Ben, from Billericay, Essex, spends two hours a day playing Mario Kart on a Nintendo DS with his twin Jake. Ben wears a patch over his good eye to make his lazy one work harder.

The twins' mother, Maxine, 36, said that from being 'nearly blind' in the eye, Ben's vision had 'improved 250 per cent' in the first week.

She said: 'When he started he could not identify our faces with his weak eye. Now he can read with it although he is still a way off where he ought to be.

And they say that video games discourage exercise. (*snort*)

Now that you know how good video games can be for you, what are you going to do to make sure that your eyes remain strong?

What If Mark Millar Wrote DC Comics?

Rich Johnston of Bleeding Cool imagined what DC Comics heroes would be like if they were portrayed by Mark Millar, the creator of Kick-Ass. Superman is pretty much a typical teenager. Click on the link to view panels with Batman and Watchmen.

AT-AT Dog

(YouTube Link)

AT-AT Day Afternoon is a short film by Patrick Biovin which imagines the AT-AT Walker as a family pet. Biovin writes, "When I was a kid, there are two things I wanted badly and never got... A real dog and a Kenner AT-AT Walker."

We've previously featured another one of Biovin's short films: Iron Baby.
