Cartridge Chess Set

Etsy seller OldWorldCC made a complete chess set which uses .223 caliber cartridges as playing pieces:

The pieces are made using .223 caliber bullet shell casings, decorated with cuts, slashes, curls and bends. The light side pieces are set on red oak mounts, using steel cased shells and the dark side pieces are mounted on black walnut, using brass cased shells.

A Sex Ed Class by H.P. Lovecraft

(Video Link)

It's time for Ms. Lovecraft's seventh grade sex ed class. The mysteries of sex unfold upon the narrator, driving him mad -- and he embraces the madness. Craig Macneill and Clay McLeod made this magnificent short film, which is well worth your time.

Pinhole Camera Egg

Francesco Capponi turned eggs into single-use pinhole cameras. The resulting images (if I understand him correctly), were imprinted on the inside of the eggs when they were cracked open. He provides step-by-step instructions on how you can do the same.

Steampunk Nerf Gun

Professor CaT Pardus took a Nerf Maverick revolver and made it all steampunk-y. Despite the heavy modifications, the "Dreameater" remains fully functional for all your Nerf defensive needs.

I really like the little details that Pardus included, particularly the dials on the side and the curled work in the trigger. You can view several more pictures and a video at the link.

Best/Worst Name for a Street

Yes, Bucket of Blood Street in Holbrook, Arizona, is completely real. There appear to be Google Street View images available, but I'm afraid to look at them.

When It Floods, Fire Ants Link Together to Form Huge Rafts

(Video Link)

David Hu and Nathan J. Mlot of the Georgia Institute of Technology investigated claims that when flooded out, fire ants will link together to form effective rafts:

"They'll gather up all the eggs in the colony and will make their way up through the underground network of tunnels, and when the flood waters rise above the ground, they'll link up together in these massive rafts," Mlot said. Together with Georgia Tech systems-engineering professor Craig Tovey, the scientists collected fire ants and dunked clumps of them in water to see what would happen.

In less than two minutes the ants had linked "hands" to form a floating structure that kept all the insects safe. Even the ants down below can survive this way, thanks to tiny hairs on the ants' bodies that trap a thin layer of air.

"Even when they're on the bottom of the raft, they never technically become submerged," Mlot said.

As the above video shows, the rafts stay together even under substantial pressure.

Warship Shoe

Artist Phil Noto made this shoe for a custom sneaker art show at the Bold Hype Gallery in New York City. I'd hazard a guess that the number 27 refers to a specific vessel, but it's hard to know precisely which one.

If Star Wars Had Been Written by Jean-Paul Sartre

(Video Link)

Philosophical debates are really a lot more interesting when resolved by lightsaber duels, which is why OneMinuteGalactica rewrote the script to Episode IV with quotations from French existentalist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. The producers include these handy viewing instructions:

And obviously this will make no sense if you understand French. If you do know it, hit yourself in the head repeatedly before watching this. And then hit yourself repeatedly when you're done watching.

They'd prefer a pond. But this will have to do for now. The dog seems rather mellow about it.

Infographics in Real Life

Jose Duarte, a graphic designer, has lately been presenting information using physical objects. These balloons, for example, represent the number of Internet users in (from left to right) China, the EU, India, Brazil, Mexico, and Portugal.

Stuffed Animal Dress

New Orleans-based crafter Miss Malaprop made a dress covered with stuffed animals for the most recent Mardi Gras. She accidentally sewed through her finger with a sewing machine needle while making it, but "Either way, I’m happy with the way it turned out, it was very fun to wear and very SOFT!"

Snow White Tattoo

The whole Snow White story -- well, the Disney version, anyway -- is told in this lovely back tattoo. I'm not completely sure who's responsible, but it's been attributed to an artist named Ping who lives in Taiwan.

Sauna Pants

Saunas are great, but they're not very portable. Here's a gadget that tries to solve that problem. The sauna pants wrap around your nether regions and give them the Finnish treatment.

A Travel Trailer Light Enough to Be Hauled by a Mobility Scooter

The Environmental Transport Association (UK) developed the QTvan -- a travel trailer that can serve as a shelter for users of mobility scooters. It contains a bed, a 19" television screen, and a kettle. Available options include a satellite dish, a gaming console, and a heater. You can watch a video of it at the link.

Gatling Gun Slingshot

(Video Link)

Garage genius Jörg Sprave, who invented the machete-firing crossbow, has made a multi-shot slingshot that repeats like a Gatling gun:

The Slingshot Channel took the challenge to design a rubber powered version of Mr. Gatling's great invention. And here it is: Eight 20 mm balls, on their way to the target in less than half a second. The theoretical firing rate is 960 rounds per minute, slightly faster than the popular M16 assault rifle.
