dj_nme brings up a good point. If the Pearl Harbor attack would have been stopped in its tracks, what would be the American attitude toward the war?
If I remember correctly, the alternate history short story "Billy Mitchell's Overt Act" depicts such an event. America is therefore reluctant to commit to a full war.
I think that the utility of the Nimitz would ultimately depend on any nuclear weapons that it had on board at the time.

My kids prefer Daddy Cow. Sometimes they ride Daddy Horse, Daddy Sheep, Daddy Cat and Daddy Pig. But they generally prefer Daddy Cow. So I give them rides around our home while mooing.
