I suspect that you're right. Like Scotty said, "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain." I've read that the complex loading mechanism was easily clogged with dust.

The Evans rifle was not just a prototype or concept gun. It was manufactured by the thousands. But it lost out to more reliable designs.
