Kenny Rogers is another that switched genres; he started out singing rock songs before switching to country. One of them was memorably used in the Coen Brothers film The Big Lebowski. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od_6M8cFdUA
He did make a brief appearance in the 50th Anniversary comedy special that Doctor #5 Peter Davison put together, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. If you're a fan of the show, the whole thing is hilarious and well worth watching. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01m3kfy
If someone makes unwanted comments to you on the street, yes, it is harassment. And if you watched the video, one guy alone creepily walked alongside her for five minutes. So, yes, it's a damn problem.
Rankin/Bass did a rather longer animated version for TV that is pretty faithful to the book, and even used Tolkien's lyrics for writing up the songs. (The main title theme is a rather sad exception.) Worth checking out if you're a fan.
One I've heard: In one scene where Bowie has young Toby Froud sitting on his lap, he's keeping Froud distracted by jiggling a toy in his out-of-shot hand.
If the show follows the plotline from the books.. then watching this particular episode with your father might not be the most comfortable of experiences..
The producers didn't add Russell and Wells' names to the credits "because they were popular", they did it because Denver used his contractual clout to force them to. He didn't even tell anyone at the time he'd done so; Wells has said she didn't find out until years later.
And re: Gilligan's name. It was never given in-series, but Denver was quoted as saying it would have been Willie if it had ever come up.
