As an amateur woodsman, I was originally going to also comment on the other ways people have solved the same problem. What stopped me was respect for innovation.
KH4 has done wonderful work. His device performs as described. He deserves praise for his efforts. Over time, better solutions will become commercial successes. The cross blade axe should be allowed to compete and thrive (or wither) on its merits.
England lead the world into the Industrial Revolution. As such, it created a middle class like never before. Some non-nobility even made vast fortunes. Quite a few Victorian customs were a way to keep such wealthy riffraff out of polite society.
I hate to go all plasmagryphon (sp?) on this one, but I disagree that this is a general rule.
Much more experimentation needs to be done, by everyone, on a very large sample size, over a long stretch of time. As a personal sacrifice, I will consume large amounts of different brands of chocolate, in different ways, over the next decade, in order to verify the results.

The washer/drier combo is a joke. Two hours to wash, two an a half to dry. Loads are about half of a small American unit. All in all, if you have two kids in school, the washer is running 24/7.
I am friends with a couple with a similar issue. They have never cleaned their home. I am even better friends with their daughter. She has offered to hire a cleaning service, but they think their home is just fine. It is not. For example, they have never vacuumed their carpet in 20 years.
We have come to the conclusion that it is pathological and decline dinner invitations.
