It's actually pretty cool right on Google Earth. You can sort of descend into the cone, and when you are done with that you can take a virtual tour of the 3D-modeled Pompeii ruins.

The spool out and uptake reels never stop, but loops of slack on either side of the gate back the intermittent motion within the gate possible.
