Baby Bunnies in the Barracks

Navy Corpsman and redditor Tokyomaneater69 found four newborn bunnies in a hole near their dead mother. He took them back to the barracks and hand-fed them each four times a day until they started to jump out of their box, at which time they went to a wildlife shelter. The four were named Steven, Raymond, Vaughn, and James. He scheduled their feedings around his workday and luckily had no barracks inspection while the rabbits were there. No Shorts? No problem!

It can get really hot inside the train cab, but male employees are forbidden by management to wear shorts. Thankfully, they've figured out a way to, ahem, skirt around the ban:

"Of course people stare at you a little when you are on the platform, but you just have to put up with it," train driver Martin Åkersten told the local Mitti newspaper.

Åkersten is one of a group of 13 male employees who have been wearing skirts in order to keep cool while working the Roslagsbanan commuter train services.

"It can be over 35 degrees Celsius in the train cab on hot summer days," he said.

Åkersten's employers Arriva have meanwhile responded positively to the move and have given their approval to the men in skirts.

"To say anything else would be discrimination," communications head Thomas Hedenius told the newspaper.

Disney College Students

DeviantART member Hyung86 drew a series of 17 Disney characters -princesses, princes, and other characters- as college students. They look just like the movie cartoons, but dressed as modern young folks. They also show some of their movie talents at school. For example, Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid is a surfer, and he hangs with David, the surfer from Lilo and Stitch. Snow White and Peter Pan look like clueless freshmen, Tarzan rides a skateboard (at the University of Kentucky), and Esmerelda is a dance student. Link -via Unreality

Riker Sits Down

(YouTube link)

Like many people, I watched Star Trek: TNG for years and never noticed how Riker sits down. And stands up. Jonathan Frakes is a tall guy with long legs, and was compelled to wear a jumpsuit uniform, so this might have been the easiest way he found to deal with chairs. Or it could be totally for style. But why did it take so long for anyone to notice? -via Metafilter

Hot Dog Vendor in a Kayak

McCovey Cove in San Francisco Bay lies just beyond the right field wall of a baseball stadium. Boating baseball fans often hang out there during games in the hope of catching stray balls. To give them the full ballpark experience, ESPN and its ad agency hired a kayaker to sell them hot dogs:

Enter London Van Der Kamp, a professional kayaker who briefly stepped away from his day job at an outdoor sporting goods company and into a specially made kayak that was used during Sunday's game between the Giants and Dodgers.

Van Der Kamp, recruited by ESPN and its advertising agency, Wieden+Kennedy, was targeted to be a floating hot dog vendor for the night. His job? To serve other Cove kayakers hot dogs, free of charge, from a custom-built contraption that contains a warming compartment and bottles of mustard and ketchup.

The Lonely Robot Makes His Escape Tonight

Toby Atticus Fraley installed the Robot Repair Shop in a vacant storefront in downtown Pittsburgh back in November of 2011. The fictional repair shop was never open, but always lit so passers-by could see the workshop, featuring a lonely robot who seemed to always want out. Over the 17 months the store has been in existence, Fraley frequently changed things around and added details that kept fans coming back to see what's happened at the shop.

However, the storefront has been leased to a restaurant, and the Robot Repair Shop is closing down today. But what about the lonely robot? He won't just disappear. Recently, he's been seen planning his escape, gathering tools and studying a map. He makes his escape this evening, heading for California, and will have a send off party to receive well wishes and pose for pictures before leaving on his next adventure. If you're in Pittsburgh, you don't want to miss this event!

Reaching Across from the Grave

A married couple of the town of Roermond in the Netherlands are forever separated by cemetery walls. According to Varik and Church Records of the 17th Century,

In 1842 a twenty-two year old Catholic woman of nobility (J.W.C. van Gorkum) married a colonel in the Dutch Cavalry. He was not of nobility and was Protestant as well. That must have been the scandal of the century in Roermont. However, the marriage had lasted almost forty years, when the colonel died. Eight years later the woman past away also. She had refused to be laid to rest in the family's large tomb and, instead, had ordered the monument that you can still see today. She lies on one side of the wall, he on the other, still holding hands.

Apparently, while the church had rules about who gets buried where, there were no hard and fast rules about such monuments. Link  -via TYWKIWDBI

Game of Thrones Theme Played on a Bell Tower

(Video Link)

The bells at the University of Wisconsin at Madison played the theme music to Game of Thrones. Lyle Anderson, the university's carillonneur, performed the piece. At 0:28, the video cuts to the interior, showing Prof. Anderson working the pedals of this elaborate instrument. This video could be better only if he was sitting upon the Iron Throne during his performance.

Ottoman Candy

If you ask me how does one make Tarihi Osmanli Macunu or traditional Ottoman Candy, which is made out of five flavors of thick taffy spiraled around a stick, I'd say magic. But our pal Juergen of For 91 Days sets us straight. He's captured the (I'd still say magical) process on video: Link - Thanks Juergen!

The 25 Books Every Kid Should Have on Their Bookshelf

Any time you want to add to a child's reading experience, whether the child is yours or someone else's, a book from this list will be much appreciated. I counted 13 that I had as a child; most of the others weren't written that long ago. Check out the reasoning behind all 25 at Flavorwire. Link

Kirk and the Gorn Fight Again

(Video Link)

It's been 46 years since Captain Kirk and the Gorn captain battled each other using rocks, fists and an improvised cannon in the Star Trek episode "Arena." The simmering tensions have risen to a full boil in this commercial for a Star Trek video game.

Both of them were a lot younger back then.
