Goat Born With Heart On Its Fur.

Alex

Barbara Opper said that a goat born with a perfectly shaped heart on its fur was a Valentine's Day gift from her deceased husband.

The goat, "Love," was born on Feb. 7. Barbara Opper says the heart is a sign from her husband, who died nine years ago.

According to Opper, her husband would go every year on Feb. 7 to buy her Valentine's Day gift.

Cheney-O-Rama!

Alex

By now, you've all heard of VP Dick Cheney shooting his hunting partner in the face (news article). Here's a couple of links:

Wikipedia's got an interesting observation:

Dick Cheney is the first known Vice President to shoot someone while in office since Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton in the famous Hamilton-Burr duel. An interesting coincidence between the events is that both victims were attorneys.

And last, but not least: Daryl Cagle's Pro Cartoonist Index: Cheney Shoots ...

Fast Food Restaurants Ice Worse Than Their Toilet Water.

Alex

Next time you order a drink at a fast food restaurant, ask for no ice. Jasmine Roberts, a seventh-grade student at Benito Middle School in New Tampa, Florida, tells you why:

When it came time for her to choose a science project, she wondered about the ice in fast food restaurants.

"My hypothesis was that the fast food restaurants’ ice would contain more bacteria that the fast food restaurants’ toilet water."

"I found that 70-percent of the time, the ice from the fast food restaurant's contain more bacteria than the fast food restaurant's toilet water."

The Johnstone's Rotating House.

Alex

Al and Janet Johnstone's San Diego home is unique: it is a rotating platform!

The house rides on one very large bearing (six foot in diameter - carrying 1,364,000 pounds dynamic load) and forty small bearings (six inches in diameter - carrying 35,000 pounds dynamic load each or 1,400,000 pounds total). The speed of the house is variable from one rotation in thirty minutes to one rotation in twenty-four hours and can be stopped in any position at any time. Starting or stopping the house rotating is as easy as turning a light switch on or off.

Scientists to Test Joan of Arc Remains.

Alex

A team of French scientists is planning to analyze whether a supposed remain of Joan of Arc is really hers.

The tests, which will take six months, will not be able to say with certainty that the remains are Joan of Arc's, because there is no known DNA sample from her to compare them with, said Dr. Philippe Charlier of the Raymond-Poincare Hospital in Garches, west of Paris.

But the analyses will determine with "absolute certitude" if the remains could not be hers, Charlier said at a news conference.

No DNA comparison can be done with possible descendants since Joan of Arc's supposed family tree is "probably false," he said.

Glowing Bacteria Art - Stocker and Nestelbacher's GFPixel.

Alex

Austrian artist Gerfried Stocker and molecular biologist Reinhard Nestelbacher collaborated to create this unique "painting" made from genetically modified fluorescent bacteria. These bugs are arranged in thousands of petri-dishes - with the pattern determined by the gene expression of the fluorescent protein (called GFP or green fluorescent protein, hence the title of the artwork).

Scientists Created Ball of Lightning in Lab.

Alex

From the website:

Eli Jerby and Vladimir Dikhtyar from Tel Aviv University in Israel have now been able to make lightning balls in the lab using a "microwave drill"

What the scientists then do is pull the microwave drill out of the solid, which drags the molten hot spot and creates a hot drop. The drop then becomes a floating fireball that measures about 3 centimetres across and lasts for some tens of milliseconds. "The fireball looks like a hot jellyfish, quivering and buoyant in the air," says Jerby.

It was found in a house in Hampshire, where it is thought to have lain hidden in a cupboard for about 50 years.
