There's a Hidden Mirror Cabin in a Forest Near Toronto

Alex

In a secluded woodland near Toronto, Canada, there is a hidden cabin that "disappears" into the trees because it's fully clad in mirrors (technically, mirrored steel). The exact location is a secret, and will only be shared with guests once they've booked a reservation to stay at the cabin.

Homes & Hues has the details: Disappear Into the Forest (Literally) at Arcana Micro Cabin Retreat

Everyday Olympics Performed by the People of Tokyo

Alex

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are over for the elite athletes, but not the everyday Olympics for the people of Tokyo!

Artist Adrian Hogan, who lives in Tokyo, noticed a lot of similarities between what the athletes did to perform in their respective sports and what everyday people in Japan did in their daily lives.

"I saw a shop clerk recently who threw open their store shutters and it reminded me of a weightlifter throwing their barbell into the air," Hogan wrote on Instagram, and that inspired him to draw a series of wonderful Olympics-inspired drawings.

Our New Sites - Check 'em Out!

Alex

I'm excited to announce our new sites: Pictojam and the re-born Homes & Hues.

Picto is focused on science, engineering, and tech stories (with a lot of fun stuff sprinkled in). H&H is geared towards home design and decor as well as the stuff you'd need for your house like home electronics and kitchen gadgets. These two are the first in a series of new niche content sites we'll be launching.

The Picto sites are built on a new platform, so things work a bit differently there (helloooo infinite scroll!) I hope you like the short video clip thumbnails on the grid - that's one of my favorite things about the new sites.

We'll continue to build the platform's capabilities as we fill the sites with new stories for you to read. In the meantime, I'd appreciate it if you'd tell your friends about Pictojam and Homes & Hues :)

Alex

British Antarctic Survey scientist Huw Griffiths explained how a team of geologists drilling through the ice to collect sediment samples found something quite unexpected half a mile under the Antarctic ice shelf:

“We were expecting to retrieve a sediment core from under the ice shelf, so it came as a bit of a surprise when we hit the boulder and saw from the video footage that there were animals living on it.”

Dr. Corona Leads the Fight Against the Coronavirus in Indonesia

Alex

Indonesia's second-largest Muslim organization has picked an emergency medicine expert to lead a task force to contain the spread of the coronavirus in the country. And it seems that he was born for the job!

Meet Dr. Corona Rintawan, who explained his unusual first name in this Arab News article:

Asked about his name, the doctor said his parents would name their children in alphabetical order. Being the third, his name had to start with “c.”
“There was no such thing as baby name books at that time, so they decided to take my name from the Toyota Corona car, which was a popular model back in the 1970s, and as they also found that it means a crown, which symbolizes something good,” he said.
