Jupiter's New Spot.

Alex

Hubble Space Telescope took a picture of a new red spot in Jupiter, dubbed "Red Spot Jr.":

"Red Spot Jr." as it is being called, formed after three white oval-shaped storms—two of which were at least 90 years old—merged between 1998 and 2000.

A similar merger took place centuries ago and formed the bigger and legendary Great Red Spot, a storm twice as big as Earth and almost 300 years old.

Scientists are blaming increasing temperature on the planet, a Jupiter "global warming".

Devil Faces Amongst Clues to a Murder Mystery.

Alex

In 2004, two Christian camp counselors were killed in an isolated Northern California coast beach. The case remains unsolved, and now the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office has released clues to the mystery, hoping that someone can help solve this case:

The items included drawings of devil-like faces drawn onto nearby driftwood.

In addition, there was a "Camo 40 High Gravity Lager" beer bottle found on the beach, a distinctive hat, a journal in which beach visitors wrote entries, and a picture of a necklace similar to one that Cutshall may have been wearing.

Carver One.

Alex

Invented by Dutch entrepreneur Anton van den Brink, Carver One steers like a car and banks like a motorcycle:

... what happens when you drive a Carver: you 'carve' corners. And even when there are none, you will be carving down the roads, carving your way through traffic, constructing your own track just like skiers carve down snowy slopes.

At low speeds and in reverse, the cockpit stays upright. As soon as you gain speed and turn the steering wheel, the cockpit banks, just like a motorcycle or, even better, an aeroplane, as the Dynamic Vehicle Control (DVC™) system automatically adjusts the tilt angle of the cockpit to the speed and acceleration of the vehicle, enabling a plane-like 'tilting before cornering'.

That's One Way to Get Rid of a Pesky TV Reporter.

Alex

From the website:

Some Orange County residents are still waiting for their loved one's headstones. Customers said the headstone maker has been hard to find since a suspicious fire at his business.

Channel 9 went to his last known address, but didn't get any answers. Instead, the person at the home threw a pitcher of water on WFTV reporter Leland Vittert.

Scallop Shells for Water Purification.

Alex

James Beaton-Johnson, Elias Fares and Amy Trottier, three J.L. Ilsley high school students discovered a cheap and effective way to clean up dirty water:

The trio got the idea from a documentary about a Japanese fish farmer who tossed oyster shells into a pond and found it cleared the dirty water.

The students at J.L. Ilsley high school began experimenting with scallop shells immersed in dirty dish water. The water cleared in 24 hours.

They discovered the shells' shape and chemical makeup neutralizes pH and also helps filter out coliform bacteria, sediment and heavy metals.

Breastfeeding Record.

Alex

Nearly 4,000 mothers in Manila, Philippines, set a world record for the largest number of women breast-feeding their babies at one time:

Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, whose city is one of the event's organizers, said 3,738 mothers simultaneously breast-fed their babies for at least one minute, breaking the Guinness World Record.

The United Nations Children's Fund said the previous record was held by the City of Berkeley, California, where 1,135 mothers simultaneous breast-fed babies for a minute on Aug. 3, 2002.

The Combimouse.

Alex

What do you get when you combine a keyboard and a mouse? Well, you get this weird gadget which purpose is to eliminate the needs to switch back and forth between the two devices (very useful for Exel spreadsheets, apparently).

The left unit is stationary and provides the function of the left hand side of a conventional QWERTY keyboard. The right unit has a similar mass and centre of gravity to a conventional mouse. It also has a similar grip.

The combimouse right unit is a mobile combination keyboard and mouse that can be moved around on a support surface like a conventional mouse. The keys are arranged in the fashion of the right hand side of a conventional QWERTY keyboard.

Wrightspeed X1: Super-Fast Electric Car.

Alex

Ian Wright is betting big on electric cars. Not just any electric car: his car can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds!

In the first matchup, the X1 crushed the Ferrari in an eighth-mile sprint and then in the quarter-mile, winning by two car lengths. In the second race, against the $440,000 Porsche, the two cars were even after an eighth of a mile. But as the Porsche driver let out the clutch in a final upshift, his tires briefly lost traction. The X1, blazing along in its software-controlled performance mode, beat the Porsche by half a car length.

It never occurred to me that I would lose," says Kim Stuart, the Porsche's driver. "It was like a light switch. He hit the pedal and was gone."

If the car looks familiar, it's because Wright builds his car from off-the-shelf parts. The chassis is actually that of British-made Ariel Atom, previously featured in Neatorama a while ago.

David Blaine's Underwater Stunt.

Alex

Magician David Blaine's latest stunt is to spend 7 days underwater inside a huge sphere at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts in New York.

During the seven-day challenge the water temperature will be maintained at around 36C and he will be able to control his own core body temperature by wearing specially designed wetsuits.

He has also undergone intensive training for the challenge, shedding 50lbs (23kg) in body weight since January to improve the efficiency with which his body uses oxygen.

"I feel pretty good. Though I've been sleeping very little and breath-holding non-stop," Blaine said.

"My system is completely empty and I did that so there's no waste. That way in the sphere I don't have to use the bathroom."

Heaviest Man in the World.

Alex

Manuel Uribe of Monterey, Mexico, is probably the heaviest person in the world. He probably weighs about 550 kg (1,200 pounds) - probably, because there just isn't a scale that can weigh him:

Manuel Uribe, bedridden for the past five years, cannot stand on his own and will need a special flight to take him from Monterrey, Mexico to Modena, where a surgical team has offered to perform an intestinal bypass free of charge.

"I can't walk. I'm can't leave my bed," the 40-year-old Uribe, who weighs the same as five baby elephants, said in a recent telephone interview.

Update 6/29/06: Manuel Uribe successfully lost 200 lb. on a high protein diet. Doctors are postponing plans for surgery, given that Manuel is responding so well to dieting. http://www.neatorama.com/2006/06/28/manuel-uribe-lost-200-lb-on-protein-diet/
