Newspaper Misspelled Own Name

Alex

I know, I know, people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Indeed, there are so many tpyos on Neatorama that it's sort of a sport for its readers to hunt for 'em. But this one is precious: New Hampshire's Valley News misspelled its own name!

Regret the Error, a blog dedicated to documenting this sort of mistakes, had already picked it for 2008 Typo of the Year: Link (The typo is still visible in the newspaper's archive section)

Man Glued Self to Prime Minister

Alex

Dan Glass, member of the Plane Stupid (an "action" group that wanted to end airport expansion) decided to take matters into his own hands when he met UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown: he decided to glue himself to the PM!

Speaking afterwards, Mr Glass said: "My left hand was covered in superglue and I stuck it to his sleeve. "I just glued myself to him and after 20 seconds he tore my hand off - it really hurt. He had to give it a couple of tugs before it came away. "He was just grinning about it. He didn't seem to take me seriously."

After the incident Mr Glass was allowed to stay Number 10 for 40 minutes. When he left the building he tried to glue himself to the gates of Downing Street but was prevented from doing so by a police officer. "I didn't have much glue left by that point," he said.

22° Halo and Other Fascinating Light Phenomena

Alex

Photo: tiagomuller [Flickr]

Tom Davie of Environmental Graffiti wrote a very neat article about the 20 most intriguing light phenomena, covering such things as moonbow, fogbow, aurora, crepuscular rays and so on.

This one above is the 22° halo:

Halos are among the most well-known of optical phenomena and appear under a variety of guises. The most frequently scene is the 22º halo, caused by ice crystals in high altitude cirrus clouds, yet the particular shape and orientation of the crystals can create variation in the appearance of the halo. During very cold weather halos formed by crystals close to the ground reflect sunlight between them sending it in several directions at once, an effect known as diamond dust.

Yellow Sticky Notes
After realizing that "to-do" lists were consuming his life, Jeff Chiba Stearns decided to create this short animated film to reflect on what he had done and what happened in the world in the past nine years ...

The animation was done in black ink on over 2,300 yellow sticky notes! Link | Jeff's website

Pro Wrestler Wants a Chair, Got Dozens
When this pro wrestler signalled for a chair to clobber his opponent, the viewers obliged ... Definitely one of the best sights I've ever seen on pro wrestling! (Certainly more interesting than the pre-scripted show ...)

Jet Skiing in a Hot Tub
Can it be done? Apparently the answer is yes.
Should it be done? is an entirely different question.

Here's a short clip of a guy jet skiing in a hot tub: Link

(Um, what is that pole doing there? What kind of a hot tub is this?)

Gun + Knife = Wasp Knife
This is the knife from hell: originally designed to kill sharks and bears, the Wasp Knife injects compressed gas into the body of the victim ...

It's a gruesome concept with a fascinating demo (they used the knife on watermelons): Link

Awsome Tattoo, Man!

Alex

It's probably not a good idea to get a Japanese or Chinese character tattoo if you don't speak the language, but something in English is safe, right? Well, perhaps not if you can't spell: The L Magazine has a round up of the 10 greatest misspelled tattoos. My lack of spelling ability has always prevented me from getting a tattoo. That and general fear of pain.

Digital Mini Rolleiflex Camera

Alex

Ooh, my father has an old Rolleiflex camera and I distinctively remember looking down the viewfinder to snap my very first photo. Now, the Rollei has been updated (and miniaturized) into this: a 5-megapixel Rolleiflex Mini Digital Camera.

I wonder what happened to Pa's old camera?

Living Skeleton Circus Performer: Dominique "The Mummy" Castagna

Alex

The Human Marvels blog has a spotlight on Dominique Castagna, a "living skeleton" circus performer also known as The Mummy, who was only 4'9" tall and weighed 50 pounds fully grown:

The Living Skeleton was a fairly common human marvel appearing in private exhibits and travelling sideshows during the heyday of human exhibition. Living Skeletons, sometimes referred to as ‘shadows’, were generally adult men afflicted with some sort of consumption disease ranging from digestive disorders to full blown cases of tuberculosis. Living Skeletons were emaciated to a startling degree, many of them weighed less that 75 pounds and some weighed as little as 50 pounds.

The Living Skeleton was often presented in tandem with a Fat Lady to better juxtapose the physical attributes of both curiosities. In fact, went visiting a new town, it was a common practice amongst showmen to stage a wedding ceremony between a Fat lady and a Living Skeleton to capitalize on free publicity and draw crowds.

Movie adaptation of comic - especially ones with many devoted fans like Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' The Watchmen - is always dicey.

Ancient Sex Curse Discovered in Cyprus

Alex

Archaeologists excavating Cyprus' old city kingdom of Amathus discovered a tabled inscribed with ... an ancient sex curse!

"A curse is inscribed in Greek on a lead tablet and part of it reads: 'May your penis hurt when you make love'," Pierre Aubert, head of Athens Archaeological School in Greece told the English language Cyprus Weekly.

He said the tablet showed a man standing holding something in his right hand that looks like an hour glass. The inscription dates back to the 7th century AD when Christianity was well established on the island, leading the French professor to surmise that it referred to the activity of witchcraft or shamans surviving from the pagan era.
