A couple of things: He is referred to Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton (which helps ally the natural confusion of modern pop-culture consumers), and "Mountains of the Moon" is a good movie that covers the events of the trek to discover the source of the Nile with Speke.

His biography by Edgar Rice contains a huge amount of detail. He was the only contemporaneous travelers known to not only mention, but campaign against FGM while visiting muslims.

He was an amazing person.
