Marcus, people still have to pass their classes. My perception when I see a professional who is a member of a historically oppressed minority is that they had to work harder to get where they were.
I think there should be no income based scholarships. The money should go to the best and the brightest and not the poorest who obviously aren't as smart or they would be rich. It is only fair to treat everyone equally.
So, many of you are ok with blackface costumes? What about the native American one with the stupid "Indian" that can't spell? I like these posters. Obviously people need to think more about ethnic stereotyping. Why can't people figure out that people who have been victims of oppression don't like being made fun of by the people who historically oppressed them?
Ted, I think the protesters want justice. The people got robbed by the banks and there's been no justice. The only policy solutions people are talking about now is paying less to retirees and teachers.
@rob, are you talking about the proposed 250k mark above which income would be taxed an additional 2%? I loved hearing about the people who said they would have no incentive to make over 250k when each dollar above that would be subject to an additional 2 cent tax. I hope they don't get mad and won't give people jobs! I'm sick of charity for the super wealthy.
Taxes fund things like roads, wars, government assistance for the working poor and all kinds of things rich people like and use. It is hardly theft or charity.
We need to tax the rich more. They use more of the common resources. They have been getting more money while they pay workers so little that their employees qualify for tax payer funded programs for the working poor.
Thomas Jefferson wanted a progressive tax so we wouldn't end up with an aristocracy who could pay whatever they want for labor.
There were times when marginal tax rates and capital gains taxes were probably too high. They are too low now.
Some people when they look at half a glass of water, they see it half full. Other people look at half a glass of water and say, "Hey! Who drank half my water!"
I couldn't find where it said she got off for the U Turn violation. Perhaps that was part of an arrangement to avoid an expensive civil suit. If that's the case, I think the citizens of Dallas got off cheap. I don't see how she is getting preferential treatment seeing as her civil rights were violated.
My great grandmother was a immigrant who never really learned English. She, in fact, wanted to move back to Germany. Her family was here though.
She was harassed for speaking German in the US during WW I. Despite the coercion, she was not able to learn English. Some people are not adept enough to learn a new language. She spoke a couple others, but couldn't get a handle on English.
There used to be tons of newspapers in all kinds of languages in the US. Is there a much of a need now for news in Italian or Yiddish in the US? Nope, all those immigrant's kids learned English. The same thing will happen here. Chill out!
Did your ancestors have it tough when they immigrated here? Spare someone else's progenitors your malice and be nice.
