Abducted Son Finds Family with Google Maps

Luo Gang was five years old when he was kidnapped from his home in Sichuan province, China, and taken to Fujian province. He was adopted by a family 1500 miles away.

“Everyday before I went to bed, I forced myself to re-live the life spent in my old home,” he said. “So I wouldn’t forget.”

But the only memory Luo had of his hometown was of two bridges.

He drew a rough map of his hometown from memory, before posting it on “Bring Lost Babies Home”, a Chinese website devoted to locating missing children through the help of volunteers.

Soon afterwards, a volunteer wrote back with valuable information - a couple from a small town in Sichuan’s Guangan city had lost a son 23 years ago. The time matched Luo’s abduction perfectly.

Luo searched for pictures of the Sichuan town and found they looked familiar to him. To confirm his suspicions, he turned to the satellite version Google Maps. The minute he zoomed in on an area called “Yaojiaba” near the Sichuan town, Luo recognised the two bridges.

“That’s it! That’s my home,” shouted Luo, in tears.

Luo was reunited with his parents soon after. Link -via Fark

The First Taste

Remember the first time you gave an olive to your child, and the emotional reaction that came over his face?

Screened at the TEDxSydney conference on Saturday The First Taste captures in delightfully slow motion the unfettered reactions of a group of children trying foods such as anchovy, Vegemite and olives for the first time.

Matt Gilmour, creative director at marketing agency Saatchi & Saatchi, says the inspiration for the film came from his two-year-old daughter, whose bewildered disappointment at a gherkin features towards the end of the film.

These kids were filmed at 500 frames per second, so we don't miss a bit of the melodrama. Link -via Metafilter

The Dedication of a Teacher

It's Teacher Appreciation Week. Cartoonist Jim Benton illustrates their work well. I offer my thanks to Mr. Walzer, my sixth grade history teacher, for showing me a new world.

In the comments, tell us about a teacher that helped you.

The Hounds of Geevor

Artist David Kemp makes art from found objects, particularly discarded remnants of the mining industry in his area, on the Tinner's Coast in Cornwall. Twenty years ago, he was alerted about a mountain of old boots that were to be buried, so he salvaged them.

A friend, working on the maintenance staff at Geevor ,watched a mechanical digger burying a pile of redundant miners boots , & gave me a shout,I drove over & filled my pickup  with the discarded boots, not knowing what I might do with them.

This discarded footwear was to become THE HOUNDS OF GEEVOR

"Relics of a vast subterranean workforce that rarely saw the light of day, each of these Hounds fed up to  three & a half families(seven boots per dog).Released from their underground labours, they now wander the clifftops, looking for a proper job"

The hounds were so popular that Kemp was commissioned to cast them in bronze for a more durable display in downtown Redruth. And Kemp is still making dogs out of boots. See more pictures of the hounds at Kemp's blog. Link  -via Arbroath

Whale Made out of Whaleboats

British artist David Kemp likes making new art from old materials, such as dogs made of boots. In remembrance of Cornwall's great fishing tradition, he made this sculpture of a whale out of two old whaleboats.

Omelette

(vimeo link)

This is a sweet film. In Omelette, a loyal dog does everything he can to help his depressed master, whatever the cost. Filmmaker Madeline Sharafian said,

I wanted to make something that focuses on how meaningful it is to make food for someone you love. My family's lives practically revolve around cooking for each other, so it's a theme that I'm deeply attached to. I hope you enjoy it!
