Ironically Stalin's mass and very quick modernisation of the Soviet Union which he realised had to be done if Russia were to survive the beginning of the 20th century coincided with Hitlers plan to take over the world, if Russia hadn't been as advanced as it was when the war broke out then Hitlers Germany would certainly have defeated Europe completely, can you imagine the D-Day landings if Hitler had his finest crack troops to hand in France, no you can't because they wouldn't have even bothered. so I suppose not all the Russians that died under Stalin died for nothing. And not forgetting Russia's terrible history before stalin the Tsar's weren't all that great either, you have to see things in the context of the time.
