I don't think it's a fake..If it was all perfect like the picture books then yes, I would definitely think it was a fake, but because this fairy isn't flawless and exactly as we imagine fairies to be, I'm more inclined to believe it real. However, if it is a hoax, then it is some cruel scumbag who did it, giving fairy believers false hope.
