You see it more in college, but you still dont see a lot of it because in American football, a lateral or backward pass is live if it touches the ground, and it can be fielded by either team's players.

So a backward lateral, which gets intercepted or ends up in the hands of a defensive player is a turnover or worse: it could result result in a defensive touchdown.

In rugby, if Im not mistaken, when a lateral touches the ground, the team on defense is awarded a scrum. They just cant pick up the ball and run for a try.
