This was the first cheese protector. You know, they have those neat little plastic "tables" to keep the top of the pizza box from ruining your cheese. Well, back in the day they made them out of brass and they cost more than the pizza. Pizza shops refused to use them. The people were outraged about the smashed pizza. Oh, the humanity!

It is the base for a combination sextant / compass. Held vertically with the handle at the bottom, a compass would be inside the circle at the octagon end and the sextant mounted above it.
