Read up on Operation Golden Lily and the financial looting of all the rest of SE Asia by Japan's emperor Hirohito. They used prisoners to excavate over a hundred booby trapped tunnels in the Philippines and stashed thousands of tons of gold and other precious jewels in them. McArthur recovered some and Marcos spent his whole regime looking for, and finding, more hidden loot. Much of it wound up in Switzerland and many other stashes around the world. Some of the money (about $35b in 1960 dollars) went to an M-fund given by Nixon to Japan's Prime Minister Kishi. Some of the recovered loot was also used to fund the cold war. A very interesting book by Sterling and Peggy Seagrave, of a few years ago, is called "Gold Warriors: America's Secret Recovery of Yamashita's Gold". You can also buy a couple of CDs from the Seagraves that supplement the book with seemingly endless documents, maps, and photos that supports their story.
