I did not realize that August 17th is Black Cat Awareness Day. Black cats and dogs are often the last to be adopted from shelters. Sometimes black cats are mistreated because of old superstitions that they are bad luck. August 17th has always been a special day for me since it's my birthday. This year I was doubly lucky to share my day with both a black cat and a black dog. The cat joined my boyfriend, the dog (who has been with me for 14 of her 16 1/2 years) and me this summer after my boyfriend's mother moved to a new place and could only keep one pet. These pets really enrich my life every day. I encourage those who are looking for a pet to consider adopting a black cat or dog.

@tzkelly, Skyline Chili is delicious!

@iron-hands, 912 is actually the area code for Savannah, GA so I am guessing that this would not actually work.

@Bearman, truth.

It seems like there is more to the story than Ashlie's current living situation. The suspicions about her involvement with a married man and the way she was treated because of her health issues seem shady. The way she was asked about her living situation seems extremely unprofessional at best.

I did some cursory poking around on the CCU website to see if there was anything about her signing a morals clause. I didn't find anything, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I've worked at four institutions of higher education. The culture at every university is unique and how staff are informed of expectations varies. She may not have been told that her living arrangements would be a conflict of interest with her job.

I'm very cautious about getting into a job where my employers could make decisions about my livelihood based on my living arrangements. I decided against applying for a job at my Catholic high school because my boyfriend lives with me. I'm ex-Catholic now and have no interest in having religion dictate how I live.

I've been working in higher education for over 20 years. I've heard stories about inappropriate parent behavior related to the child's workforce and it is depressing. I'm not saying that parents should not provide assistance because there may be times when this is suitable. But trying to keep a college-graduate child from experiencing any discomfort while job searching or working may stifle that child's ability to complete tasks on her/his own. Being an employee is very different from being a student. While a college or school may need to communicate and interact with parents in a certain way to keep the student enrolled, an employer has no such need when it comes to employees. Developing resilience is a critical skill in these uncertain times.

I run with a group of people who routinely shares humor through sending internet links, making word plays, telling anecdotes, using puns, etc. It's pretty fast-paced and there is a spirit of friendly competition that prompts each of us to up our own games when it comes to making others laugh. There are men and women in this group. I think each of us developed the coping mechanism of making others laugh when we really wanted to cry.

I don't think one gender is funnier than another (and want to acknowledge here that there are more than two). I don't think comedians are the best gauge. It appears to me that comedy work is much more difficult for women to access for a variety of reasons. There are many women who would be great comics who don't have the opportunity to do so. I don't find stereotypical gender humor funny myself.
