I believe the reason lies behind the fact that if what the "truthers" are saying is true, or even part of it is, it would create an insecurity that most people are not prepared to handle. People get defensive when their ideals and convictions are put into question. Imagine if there was a large lobby trying to prove that Jesus was a homosexual. OK not the best example but I think you get my point. Plus we all watched many of our countrymen die in a horrible way that day. Many people need someone to blame and to blame one's own government is a pill way to large for many people to swallow.
