1. Try peppermint oil soaked on a cotton ball. I've tried this and it seems to work. No droppings where I put it. Just make sure your son doesn't get into it.

I was at the Oregon Zoo last year with my parents (they were visiting from out of town). And we stopped to check out the porcupine exhibit. Dad wondered how they mate and not two second later the porcupines proceed to demonstrate. A boy about 4 years old asked what they were doing and his big sister said they were playing and very quickly whisked him away. Needless to say, we got a big chuckle out it.
