I watched the special on the raising of the Hunley. I found a picture of a model of the sub. What threw me off was the barbs on the shaft, which now make sence incase the point went ALL the way through the rotten planking of the ships.
BTW all the crew were tall men to be able to turn the crank which was off of center so therefore they required long arms. The best guess was the subs hatch was open or ajar when they dived and they flooed themselves. The crew were not all americans they hired Sweds etc.
