Andrew Dalke's Comments

I learned about Gadsby several years before I had friends who, in English class, read The Great Gatsby. I was confused about why they were 1) reading a book most known for having no 'e's, and 2) why "Great" was in the title.

Is the controversy for #6 that the sun can set that early in high latitudes? And for #7, is it that those cars could be in storage on a siding, and the real problem is that the smoke is going in different directions for the two engines?

What definition of "not politically correct" includes the 5 or so tobacco commercials, including the chewing tobacco one? The only one I can figure is "don't like being told I'm doing harmful/stupid things."

Volvo's self-driving cars also have problems with poorly painted American roads. Quoting Volvo's North American CEO, '"It can't find the lane markings!" Kerssemakers griped to Mayor Eric Garcetti, who was at the wheel. "You need to paint the bloody roads here!"' http://www.reuters.com/article/us-autos-autonomous-infrastructure-insig-idUSKCN0WX131 . To be fair, the other car manufacturers also have problems.

Every generation contains many who think the next generation is physically or morally suspect. I once looked for old uses of "silver platter", and found quotes like "We want to teach them not just to sit back and expect things to be handed to them on a silver platter but with confidence, based on their training, to go out and get what they want. We need to stiffen a moral flabbiness that has been affecting our youth." from 1937 and "We have reared a bunch of weaklings in our young marrieds of today. Too much has been handed to them on a silver platter without their having had to work for it, and they lack the intestinal fortitude to meet life as a challenge." from 1949. Also, the newest generation was raised during a time of gay rights, so for them the homophobic slur "sissy" has likely lost most of its sting.

Agreed. Most of these lists are things like "In Tallahassee it's illegal to bring a short-haired pomeranian into the Department of Education building", when the actual law is that dogs aren't permitted in public buildings. (Don't know if that's actually a law.)

Modern Hanoi has a sewer system. Various sources say it's a combined wastewater systems developed over 100 years, and not in very good shape. Does it still have a rat problem? The article frustratingly says nothing about the design changes that were made.
