One other thing..you can't impose modern values on old societies. In the 19th century human life was pretty cheap unless you were wealthy. Not suprising that animals were considered fodder to be used any way we chose to use them. Its one thing I always detest in films - modern value judgements coming from supposed ancient peoples.
I find it annoying that we keep beating ourselves over the head with this. Yes, in ignorance we have wiped out animals. It would have been incredible if we hadnt done that to be honest. How many species have humans saved from extinction? We never hear that little statistic...or the fact that the greatest exctinctions in history have all been due to mother nature.
Nature evolved us into being, on one hand, the perfect killing machine and on the other the exact opposite. Thats life, thats what humans are. Its like blaming rats for plagues as if it were their fault. Extinctions were bound to happen as a result of the evolution of humans. The same will probably happen to us as a result of the evolution of completely drug resistant bacteria - not far down the line.
In the UK Gypsies are often banded together with Travellers.
Travellers are harassed continually, never allowed a moments peace and are shunned wherever they go. On the flipside they will occupy any spare land without any care for trespass law - in the UK about 99% of land if not all of it is owned by someone. They will share no concern for the welfare of the land or anyone nearby. I'm speaking through experience here not ignorance. On many occasions they would camp opposite my work, be forcibly moved within a week and in that week they will have littered everywhere, fouled the ground with dog poop and cut down trees for firewood or anything else. On several occasions employees would be attacked by the dogs and they would tear up the grass with quad bikes. Genuine Roma unfortunately are pretty much always seen as Travellers and treated with the contempt that travellers often bring upon themselves.
The National Anthem here in England is a godforsaken awful funeral dirge I hope to never hear again. We really really need a new anthem...kudos to the kid. That takes guts.
I'm hoping they aren't classing the "long pull out" at the start of Contact as "sound in space" because it isnt. Its supposed to represent our signal sphere of broadcasts as you recede from Earth.
You get present day broadcasts at Earth trailing off to vintage and grainy broadcasts as you get into the stars. I think our signal sphere is about 85 light years in radius at them moment?
In no way was it meant to be sound in space if thats what they were thinking.
Suprised there isnt one for all ships having Earth gravity too.
That said - a good many of those are purely because of budget reasons if nothing else. Ones I hate are the big budget movies that use bad science for no readily apparent reason. Armageddon is one huge bad science extravaganza. I mean I dont think a single space scene actually obeys any law of physics...
Contact - sound in space? When? Trying to remember its been a while but do they ever actually go into space at any point?
While this is a weapon, railguns are a feasible single stage to orbit solution for unmanned payloads obviously.
Also Mach 7 is the operating speed of a Scramjet so you could use this to launch one immediately to its normal operating speed since a scramjet cant operate at subsonic speeds.
You could probably use it to weld things, pile drive foundations, mine without explosives...

Lots of possibilities.
