I don't mean to be a party-pooper, because this is still a funny idea, but I'm afraid it isn't quite real:

I think it somewhat depends on where you decide to draw the boundary of "Earth", because the hydrogen and helium that escape from the atmosphere are effectively just creating another layer of it (called the exosphere), and hence are not lost.
It's true though that this layer can be high enough to be exposed to solar winds, which would disturb it and send the particles out of orbit. But that seems difficult to estimate since it depends on solar activity and the magnetic activity of the Earth.

Try that input:
plot e^(-3*((0.5+x)^2+y^2/2))+e^(-x^2-y^2/2)*cos(4*x), x=-3..3, y=-5..5

I don't think it's possible to see the intersection at z=0.001 as they've done in the picture though.

Not really sure about Rick Smith's reaction...

Basically what's happening is that Target made an ad that happened to have a trisomic kid in it but didn't mention it, and he thought that was so brilliant that he went:
"Hey look everybody! That kid's got down syndrome! That one on the left! LOOK! He's got DOWN SYNDROME I tell you! And nobody knows it! That's great!"

A real victory for inclusiveness.

@Mirar, the clone would have the same DNA as the original, obviously, but that's about all we can say. There are many (so-called epigenetic) factors that determine how the organism develops.

If you want an example of a healthy clone, see Cc (aka Copycat) the first cloned cat, born in 2001 and as far as I'm aware still alive. By the way she doesn't look anything like her "mother".

It's even worse if you consider that the clone may very well not even look like the original.

The only thing they'll have in common is genetic material... so yeah, if you love your pet's genes, why not.

@Sandi Craws: Yes the french are well known for not being able to cook, especially among people who can't write proprely.

There's apparently also a third burger which looks a bit more appetizing than this one.

Look, I'm not American and I don't live in America. I'm pretty much not involved in this whatsoever so I'm not saying this because I feel offended, but the idea that something that comes out of a certain culture BELONGS to that culture is stupid. So is the idea that paying money and showing respect are the same thing.

If you make pizza, just give the Italians some money will you? That's very helpful to people who like to make distinctions between cultures, or "races", whatever that means.

As usual with "news" articles, this one treats a 16-page booklet of regulations, focuses on one single point of it, and then misrepresents that.

If you read the source material (here: http://www.cbc.ca/news/pdf/nl-evaluation-regulations-20111005.pdf), it seems that the point is to emphasize the evolution of the students as a whole, in a context, not solely based on exam results.

The rule on cheating states that if a student is caught attempting to cheat, he will not be graded on that assessment.
Then it goes on to say that "Cheating is a serious offense and should be addressed through the normal disciplinary procedures of the school", and that "cheating on public examinations shall be dealt with according to Department of Education Policy" (i.e. disqualification from all examinations).

Now that might still be open to debate, but at least it's good to get the facts before reaching conclusions. (And it's increasingly apparent that we can't rely on journalists to provide them)

Here's a picture of Jessica Metcalfe:

Who the hell does she think she is, wearing this non-native American lab coat!! Also, she profits from a university degree, which is a European invention!! This is a disgrace.

I was going to write an essay on why this article is partial and blatant anti-EU propaganda, but I came across something that makes it redundant.

The first link in the "related articles" is this: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/8632375/Advice-to-drink-eight-glasses-of-water-daily-nonsense.html

So.. you make your mind up.

I'd never heard of "baby ghettos" before but they do seem appropriate, given that babies DO cry and this is undeniably one of the most annoying sounds conceivable (that's what it's for). By the way if you think your baby won't cry because it's a well behaved baby, he still has underdeveloped Eustachian tubes, and doesn't know how to equalize pressure in his ears, so he WILL cry.

As for companies separating parents from their children, well that's not very good practice, nor will it make their customers very happy. But the key sentence here I think is "unless passengers arrange seat swaps on board"... So if that happens to you, don't just sit where you're told to for 10 hours and then complain about it to the internet, just go near the human being who's at the place you'd like to take and use your vocal chords to ask him politely if he wouldn't mind horribly switching places with you.

The story is definitely true, but I agree that the pilot's idea to alert his first officer rather than the cabin crew was very poorly thought out.
First of all because there are about 30 pages of FAA regulations on who is allowed to enter the flight deck, and secondly because the copilot couldn't have done anything about it anyway, since he couldn't have left his seat (being the only pilot at the controls and all).
