In California, technically the fine is $20. However, the state also applies additional taxes and fees to the initial fine so you actually end up paying around $300.
I lived in England for a couple years and had the benefit of seeing a few other European countries in the meantime...what impressed me most was how walkable everything was. America is car oriented. While there are sidewalks here, you rarely seeing people use them. It's understandable as the roads in the States are made for cars, not pedestrians. In Europe I didn't drive, I walked everywhere without a second thought. Here in the States I feel like I have to take extra caution every time I cross an intersection.
Thank you so much for posting this! I not only saw the episode of Mr. Wizard (I believe I was 9 at the time) but also destroyed a whole bunch of bananas in the process (my mom was not pleased). No matter how clean the needle, the banana will always have brown spots where the needle goes through. Unless the banana is pretty old to begin with, I can't foresee anyone falling for this 'trick'.
