I was only 11, and living in the UK we heard about it later in the day. We watched coverage on the TV's in school, and everyone was eerily quiet, especially for a group of 11 year olds in a previously uninteresting history class.

I remember the headline of one of the newspapers the next day, with the simple exclamation "BASTARDS!" above a mid-hit tower photograph. It meant something then, and still does now.

Am I the only one in favor here of the Post Office? He wasn't adhering to strict uniform rules. Living in Britain myself, posties have to all wear the same uniform at set times, so shorts at set times during the summer, even if it is freezing, etc. They are representing the organisation, and each postie does his part. Who cares if they were "similar", they are still not regulation. As stupid and arbitary they may seem, the rules are the rules, and although the police escort seemed a bit heavy handed, discipline was the right way to go.

I think it is a door hold then release catch. You slide the door catch across, hook it, pull the lever to lock it, and to open it, you step on the top "button"

We have an old one from an old fire station, and it looks a bit like that
