Today's equivalent of the lobotomy? IMO gastric bypass surgery. Amputation of a healthy organ, when there are other means available that are just as effective (e.g., stomach bands), less destructive, less lethal, and reversible. Years from now, I think society will look back on gastric bypass and the doctors who performed the surgery the same way we now view lobotomies and Dr. Freeman.
