The clothing seems to be a bit of an anachronism for the late 1830s. In the 1830s a well to do chap would have sported a much higher collar, a wider cravat and the lapels of his jacket would have been far wider...not to mention that the four-in-one knot wasn't really common until the 1870s and 1880s. The style here looks to be of the 1880s...it just doesn't fit the 1830s.
