Herzog's Comments

There is a British movie about a brave archaeologist fighting the Nazis called "Pimpernel Smith".
Leslie Howard made the film with his own money made from his role in "Gone with the Wind".
This is a more likely inspiration - especially since they had to search for a new "MacGuffin" for each movie, and the Holy Grail didn't come around until the 3rd film.

Originally Spielberg wanted to do a Bond film. Lucas said "I've got a better idea" and pitched Indiana Smith (later Indiana Jones). Indiana was the name of Lucas' dog, who used to sit next to him in his car, providing the inspiration for Chewbacca.

Some of the comments here are asinine, on both sides.
Social Darwinism is and was a disaster, but what does evolution really have to with genocide? If you really understood it, you would realize that it does not "logically lead" to immorality.
Was the Armenian genocide committed by Turkish Darwinians? There have been pogroms and wholesale slaughter throughout history that had ZERO to do with evolution.
Evolution is a long term phenomenon. The only criteria for success is survival and reproduction: so you can have rich, smart, talented, athletic people with 20-20 eyesight who have no kids and morbidly obese people with a slew of congenital defects who have eight. Which one is the evolutionary success? In the short term, the fattie with eight kids. In the long term, her kids may all end up being dead ends too.
Evolution does not mean "progress." It just means being well-adapted to your environment.

On the one hand, the myth of "violent America" is because the whole world sees the U.S. through its news, TV and movies (like the Sopranos) which distorts the view people have.

That being said, the murder rate in the U.S. is much higher than in other countries. Britain has a lot of assaults, but much fewer murders.

Canada has severe restrictions on guns and has a much lower gun and crime rate. There are more than just two ways of doing things.

At the age of 30, a friend of mine was about 80 lbs overweight and went to the doctor, who told him that he had high blood pressure and would be dead by the age of 40 if he didn't lose weight.
As he put it, there are all kinds of discrimination in our society that are stupid and unjust, but making fun of fatty isn't one of them, because if people try to stay thin because they are afraid of being insulted, it is good for their health.

WTF?! Castro is more important than Mulroney? you must be a troll, because Mulroney hasn't been PM of Canada for 14 years.
How much exactly do you need to know about Cuban politics, when there's been one guy in charge for about 50 years?
so depressing...

I believe that glass is generally accepted to be a supercooled liquid. It is known to flow, for example in stained glass windows that are hundreds of years old.

As I recall from reading a book by Magnus Pyke, glass does have a crystalline form, which is very brittle in comparison with its liquid form.

There are some interesting articles about this system at wikipedia and Popular Science. Costs $150 million and despite the field setting its main purpose is defending airports, because of the massive power supply required.

I would like to point out that Lucas was a car freak in his teens, and that a lot of the racing and chase scenes in the Star Wars and Indiana jones flicks were because he loved racing sports cars.
One of his early student films is shots of cars, and there are race scenes in both American Graffiti and THX 1138.
When he was in grade 12, he crashed a convertible sports car he was driving. The car itself was wrapped around a tree, and the impact was so violent that the racing seatbelt that Lucas had installed was ripped out of the car by the bolts. Lucas spent several weeks in hospital, felt lucky to be alive, and decided to make something of his life. He was failing Grade 12 at the time. He decided to go to film school...
And I think that fucker looks sweet.
