There is also the option for "double-red" donations. An apheresis machine is used to separate the blood - they keep 2 pints worth of red cells and you get the plasma back. The time between donations is longer but a patient can get two units of red cells from the same donor. You don't feel as weak afterward because you keep the fluid.
