I'm a Christian, and I was raised to believe that homosexuality is wrong. However, I have also been raised to respect the US Constitution, and that's why I'm glad that gays can marry, and I wish more states would follow California. The US Constitution promises that the government will not adopt any official religion. All arguments against gay (and lesbian) marriage are religion-based. So it is unconstitutional to prohibit gay marriage. By preventing gays from marrying, you are forcing Christian/Muslim beliefs on people who may not espouse those beliefs. The choice to marry homosexuals or not should be left up to individual people and churches, not the government.
I never meant to imply that Ravenous isn't also a fine piece of cinema. Whether you prefer one or the other is largely personal taste. Ravenous is better directed and has much better acting. But for my taste, you can't beat a choreographed dance number to the song "Hang the Bastard" in Cannibal! The Musical.
I think that even back then they could get him for desecrating a corpse, or "defiling the dead" or somesuch. But cannibalism itself is not generally illegal. And "Cannibal! The Musical" is the best film version of the Al Packer story. Much funnier than Ravenous.
Sorry to rain on this parade, but Al Packer was never convicted of cannibalism. Cannibalism has never been a crime in most states. He was convicted of murder. He was accused of cannibalism and it was pretty much proven that he was a cannibal, but it wasn't a crime. He didn't get arrested for eating people. He got arrested for killing them in order to eat them.
I love Spam. For a long time when I was poor and living on my own in Seattle, Spam was the only thing approaching meat that I could afford. My friends all bought me Spam for Christmas. Clerks at the grocery stores would give me strange looks when I bought Spam, until I explained that I am from Minnesota, where Spam was invented. Later I moved back to Minnesota and got married. For our honeymoon, we went to Austin, Minnesota and toured the Spam museum. It is one of my fondest memories and I still wear my Spam t-shirt purchased there. Now nearly 3 years later we are still happily married, living in Scotland. There is nearly always a can of Spam in our cupboard, as a friendly reminder of home.
I'm American, but living in Scotland with three guinea pigs, three hamsters and a Scottish husband.
