Apparently he built a "sauna" room down there by plumbing in about 30 bathroom sinks and running all the hot taps (fawcetts) at the same time.
Mad as a cut snake the old bloke was.
He is actually the Mole Man of Dalston,if you live in Hackney, and the Moleman of De Beauvior if you live in Dalston.

As a small aside, the box of donuts is a very weird idea.
It exists only in North America as far as I've seen.
From the very far north of Scotland through all of Scandinavia,all of mainland Europe, over to Australia and NZ, if you want a donut or a patisserie or a sticky bun, you go and buy one.
