British navigation scholar Tim Severin over several years in the late 1970s built a hide-covered boat following the instructions described by St. Brendan, and sailed it from Ireland to Newfoundland via Iceland and Greenland, demonstrating the accuracy of its directions and descriptions of the places Brendan mentioned in his epic, and proving that a small boat could have sailed from Ireland to North America.

"Severin’s route then carried them to Iceland where they wintered, as did Brendan. The volcanoes on the island have been active for many centuries and might well have been erupting when the monks stayed there. This could have accounted for the “pelting with flaming, foul smelling rocks”, referred to in the ninth century text. The monks had never seen icebergs before, so their description of them as “towering crystals” would make sense."

He wrote a book about it, too; google his name and you'll find it. Awesome stuff.

"Treat others as you would like to be treated."

Now, wait, I've heard that before...who said that? Do unto others...? Hmmm...

And so why should I Do unto others? What if others get in my way? What if I believe that I'm worth more?

Moral? What's moral for you may not be moral for me. Values? Who's values? Why should I care about other people? Because it's good? What's "good"? Says who? And why? Who cares?

Values are moveable and relative. Virtues are not. There's a difference.
