State is the name of the coldest of all cold monsters. Coldly it lies; and this lie slips from its mouth: "I, the state, am the people." It is a lie! - Nietzsche
I agree that there is an initial "wow" effect, but it is only temporary. Once the eye has a chance to scan it pretty quickly picks out which individuals are most desirable.
Good guess, but the details of the wooden leg are what jump out at me, and I don't think it was him. The man in the story I heard was shot during the French and Indian war, making Hugh too young.
Back on topic (sorry about the derail) I could have sworn my father told me a story about an 18th century fur trapper who cut off his own leg.
The story went that he had been shot in the foot by natives, and the musket ball had shattered the bones. He knew it was headed south of cheese, so he cut his foot off with a knife, then carved a wooden stump, screwed it into his bone, and walked back to town.
Years later he was in a bar brawl, and he unscrewed his wooden leg and beat two men to death with it. I'm desperately trying to find a source on the story, so feel free to ignore until I confirm.
To be accurate, I would say that (by my usage) China is a mixture of fascist economics and blatant cronyism, though socialist rhetoric still pervades. By "entirely capitalistic" then one assumes that you mean a combination of private ownership and "for profit", on which we can agree. They have followed the trend of every other industrialized nation in the last century, and gone for the "Third Position" bit by bit.
I am unaware of any state in the world that has a "pure capitalistic" anything, but that word is difficult because it is defined so variably by so many people. I mean free market, you may mean for profit, and someone else may mean neo-merchantilist or cronyist. I think we can agree that the PRC Ministry of Health has more than a little control over healthcare in China.
AFAIK, the only medical system that reaches out to rural areas is the New Rural Co-Op Medical Care System (NRCMCS), but that apparently has some gaping holes in it.
