I'm one of those odd but true cases - my grandfather died immediately before I was supposed to take a final exam for a senior course. I wouldn't have had a problem taking the exam, but my mother was inconsolable and in cardiac distress herself, and needed someone to accompany her to the out-of-country funeral and all associated activities (viewing, wake, etc.) I'm grateful my prof was understanding and didn't just call bullshit on the situation.
