A similar thing happened when I was in college. Our professor had an e-mail list for his class, which he updated between semesters, but forgot to remove the previous semester's students. This was a big lecture that always had about 200 students in it (so the list had about 400 students in it). The e-mails were hilarious "please remove me from the list" x 100 "there's no need to reply all" x 100. My favorite though was someone replying and saying that a printer's e-mail address (because we could send e-mails to printers to get them to print things) had been added to the list and had been printing out the hundred or so e-mails that were sent.
