When I was 9, the books that I was allowed to borrow were such that I could read any of them in an hour or two. Only a few of the unedited "classics" like Twain took longer than that. I had to ride my bike several miles twice a week just to have enough to read during the summer.

I exhausted the libraries of my school, the local branch and the regional library before I entered high school, and had to order then from the main branch of the Chicago Public Library. Now in my 70's I still find time to read a book per day and though authors are more numerous and prolific, each year it gets harder to find new ones worth reading.

I would NEVER discourage a 9 year old, who loves reading so much that she thinks about what she'd do in an emergency, from taking as many books at a time as permitted by the library. The only dangers are that she may run out of books to borrow that she wants to read, or she'll learn to read a lot better than her peers. That second danger will give her a big boost as she progresses through school.

I WOULD get her a tablet and set her up with online access to a free lending collection ASAP.

If the goal was to control German cockroaches, all this proves is that researchers at Purdue don't know how to do basic research or clean, and should have their funding and their jobs terminated.
Pesticides are one of the most expensive and least effective ways of controlling insects, while being more dangerous to humans than the insects are. Poisons are the method of choice for insect control by the feeble-minded who believe that rapidly killing is a solution for a species that can multiply 1000-fold within weeks.
The most effective control method is cleaning and removal of all water and easily digested organic material that isn't in sealed containers. Without those things, an insect colony will move or die within 2-3 life-cycles of the insect. They will vanish almost as fast as modern collegians without food, water and caffeine..

If you must accelerate the process, there are safe inexpensive alternatives to poisons.
Boric acid crystal powder will kill cockroaches, ants and many other insects in a manner that they can't become immune to without growing 10 larger. For smaller insects and arachnids, diatomaceous earth does the same thing.Neither of these materials is poisonous to humans or mammals.

If we lived like ants, we wouldn't need air conditioners, or heaters and our planet wouldn't be so close to being unable to support the unsustainable artificial lifestyle that we chose.
When you don't force ants to live in glass boxes for your personal amusement, they will tolerate the heat far better than you would.
In the "wild" all animals and insects pick places to live that match their metabolisms. Many ants live underground, and in zones where the temperature under the ground drops within a few feet to 55F - and lower.
