If you're in a room of English speakers and someone a table away is speaking Dutch, this happens. The two languages have the same vowels, mostly, and Dutch elides most of its Germanic chewy consonants. The effect is of rhubarb-brouhaha Englishy noises, with not a word you can latch onto. In the background, you never notice.
