Of course he is a poor choice for the award! Man-influenced global climate change is a hoax; it's only a pity that it will take a couple of hundred years of harmful policy misdirection and handicapping of Western economies for this to become evident.

I will give it to Gore, though. Unlike some who purely seek profit from the scare, but know it to be hokum, Gore really believes this stuff. I honestly think he is sincere, but he frankly overestimates his own comprehension of science. He thinks he technologically "hip" and informed about environmental matters because he subscribes to Scientific American & knows Bono. He doesn't seem to understand the basics of scientific inquiry, though, and that's the first step to being a real scientist.

As others have pointed out, it's most amusing that he justifies his own excesses through his purchase and advocacy of carbon indulgences. His arrogance belies that he thinks he is better than the rest of us.

Wow, that's a tough choice. I'm thankful I'm not in her shoes or even those of her husband or family members.

That said, I'm not sure there really needs to be yet another non-profit organization "raising awarenss" for a disease everyone knows about. Unless the multitude of breast cancer awareness organizations are doing something glaringly wrong, each additional one just adds more overhead and sucks up $ just to run itself. "Non-profit" doesn't mean by a long shot that everyone involved volunteers their time and resources. Almost always, the staff is raking $ off the top. I don't know the finances of this organization, but why does there need to be another? Next to AIDS, breast cancer has better publicity & media coverage than any disease out there.

Also, a minor gripe, but the CNN piece is rather poorly written... She "volunteered" to get the double mastectomy? That makes it sound like she was subjecting herself to an wildly speculative experimental new treatment. More like she evaluated the risks and decided that a prophylactic (ok, no laughing at that word) double mastectomy was the best course of action. It was a sound rational decision on her part aimed at preserving her life and minimizing future anguish to her family. I'm not faulting her for her choice or disputing it (it's a tough personal call), but "volunteering" pre-emptive removal isn't exactly the best way to describe it.

Finally, if I see another article that describes people "empowering" themselves, I am going to puke. What a trite overused bit of pablum that word has become. Please let's all bury it.

Tim-
Mortgage? What mortgage? Dude, you really must think I am someone else, because you keep coming up with very specific personal details about my life that are wrong... completely out there in fact (like me living with my mom). Are you going to tell me you hate the color of my Green Honda (which I don't own) next? Or that my beagle (which I don't have) barks too loudly? You are even sure you know my political affiliation and you've screwed that up as well. In fact I am completely independent. Yes, I do frequently vote Republican (but often Libertarian) for national elections. In local elections, though, I almost always vote (gasp) Democrat. Cold reading is not your forte, my friend :-)

Please relax a little... Maybe sit back with a cold 40 oz malt liquor or two. You get very irate very easily.

Pax teum.

Tim,
Wow, it sounds like you really have a good handle on how to work the system in Orlando. It's a shame that none of the accomodations are to your liking, though. Perhaps a change in venue is in order? Try to manage the anger though... it's not going to help you retain employment. Best of luck & keep us posted. :-)

Move out of my mother's house? Huh? That's a stupid comment... I've owned my own house for 12 years and haven't lived with my parents since I was 18, when I went away to college.

If the homeless under discussion can't hold even a simple job (raking leaves, picking up litter, etc.) and don't want to live in one of the multitude of charity shelters, they frankly should be institutionalized and/or forcibly detoxed. Having them staggering about on the streets (usually drunken, drugged, or otherwise irrational & inebriated) using the world as their latrine isn't safe for them or the rest of us.

Mass feedings of the feral was prohibited at the park in question, because it encourages large masses them to congregate, create a danger of others, and leave unsanitary messes about. There are shelters and foodkitchens (and dozens of government dole programs) for the lazy and plenty of psychiatric facilities for the demented. Use them. If you want to be an advocate for the homeless that is fine. Start by bringing them into your home or doing things to help them behind closed doors -- maybe get them the mental help most of them need.

This guy is all about getting attention for himself. He's like a politician (all political parties do this) that show up to "work the soup kitchen" for an hour with a huge camera crew in tow. And since a number of you like to wield the Bible as a weapon, I'll offer Matthew 6:1:4 "Take heed that ye do not do your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven..." I've quoted only the first verse, but keep reading as it warns against being a hypocrite who sounds a trumpet every time he gives alms; rather, do good works in secret and not for the attention of men or to be noticed...

So there!

I've been to SF -- lovely city but too few parking spaces as it is and apparently too many morons like these taking them up with "temporary parks". SF has beautiful REAL parks -- what is the point of some family of peaceniks setting up an inflatable wading pool and generally looking like trash idiots?

So nobody answers why this guy doesn't feed people on his own property... I can tell you the answer. He was trying to get arrested and make a general pest out of himself. He's an attention grubbing little twerp, and little else. If he really wanted to help the homeless, he would start a business and seek to EMPLOY them. Instead, wolfboy craves being in the spotlight.

Rochester, where I (sadly) live, has a huge deaf population on account of a couple deaf schools here. It's very common to have hearing people try to communicate with deaf cashiers and vice versa. People seems to deal with it OK. I don't recall anybody getting clubbed over it, anyhow.

About the only tension I can recall is from hearing friends who lived in a dorm at college with a lot of deaf people. Everything was peachy except the deaf folks liked to play their music REALLY REALLY loud (even if totally deaf, they stll feel the vibrations) and some of the deaf folks were unaware their amorous adventures in the sack were also very loud.

The fact he has had a whole string of prior acts (some violent) and is still committing violent acts tells us that he has not been rehabilitated and in fact can be considered incorrigible. Toss him in the clink and put him to work breaking rocks.

If wolfboy is so intent on helping the homeless, why doesn't he invite them to his house for dinner or a big cookout on his own property.

The twerp got in trouble because he violated a ban on mass feedings in a PUBLIC PARK. If he is so devoted to the cause, why won't he feed them in his own home?

"Perversions" is a strong term when we are really discussing transliterations from Sanksrit, Arabic, or whatever into the Latin alphabet. The exact spelling is open to interpretation by the scholars involved but once it is established in a language, let's not keep re-visiting it every time some new know-it-all wants to assert their moral superiority over the previous generation.

Undoubtedly there are plenty of English words that get mangled upon entry into other languages. We just don't get our grass skirts in a bunch over it. Loosen the bone, and get back to witch doctoring. We will try our best (we consider this our "white man's burden") to properly transliterate your words into the Roman alphabet. If we screw up, let us know now, not in 50, 100, or 200 years.

Straight talk from Sid

P.S. - if you use our calendar system, please abide by the proper B.C. and A.D. date system. "B.C.E." & "C.E." are hokey modernisms that bow to political correctness whilst still curiously embracing the Christian calendar. If using B.C. and A.D. is painful for you, come up with your own date system based upon the reign of Atahualpa or whatever.

Vodou? I had to do a doubletake. So this is the new P.C. term for Voodoo, huh? Voodoo is the stuff of cheezy B-movies, while Vodou is a legitimate religion (with zombies)?

Come on, this is ridiculous. First Hindoos want to be Hindus, then Moslems want to be Muslim, and now this. Stop re-inventing yourselves, people. At least the Mormons, Shakers, and Quakers, had the good sense to embrace and adopt the names given them. Those were teh good old days...
