The new biography of Ty Cobb by Charles Leerhsen, entitled "Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty" (http://www.amazon.com/Ty-Cobb-A-Terrible-Beauty/dp/1451645767) goes a long way in showing that Cobb's reputation as a virulent racist was weaved from who,e cloth after his death. Cobb was an a$$, but African-Americans were no more of a target of his nastiness than anyone else. His ancestors were abolitionists and he argued for the integration of the national pastime. I was shocked when I heard these things, as was the author when he discovered this side of Cobb, so complete has been ithe mischaracterization of the Georgia Peach. (The author said that he started the book assuming that any new research he conducted would simply reinforce the commonly accepted view of the man.)
