What Is It? game 329

Hey look! It's time to play a game, from Neatorama and the wonderful What Is It? Blog! Do you know what the object in this picture is? It doesn't really matter if you do, because we are looking for the funniest guesses. You can win a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! But first, read the rules:

Place your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, please, though you can enter as many as you'd like. Two winners who submit funny and/or clever (albeit ultimately wrong) answers will each win a T-shirt from the NeatoShop.

If you guess the correct answer, you'll get a big pat on the back.

Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don't include a selection, you forfeit the prize, okay? May we suggest the Science T-Shirt, Funny T-Shirt and Artist-Designed T-Shirts?

Check out more pictures of this thing, and other mystery items, too, at the What Is It? Blog. Good luck!

Update: This item is a sonometer for acoustic lab experiments. Your answers were much more interesting! ColShorts said it is, “Rehab For Springs. Know a spring that's in a downward spiral ? That can't curb their twisting and turning, debauched behavior ? A short time in this unit will put your beloved spring back on the straight and narrow.” That’s good for a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! Barking_Bud wins a t-shirt for this answer, “It's an original Brushy One String DELUXE! (watch the video!!)” Including the video was a clever touch, so I added it below. See the answers to all the mystery items of the week at the What Is It? blog.

A prototype slide guitar created by Ludwig van Beethoven during his "blues" period. Sadly, it led to a dead end and "Ode to Joy".

It's a practice electric fence for would-be thieves. On the other end, there is a knob where you can change the voltage and amperage. Starting at a little shock, you can acclimate and then raise the power until you can climb electric fences with ease!

It's a starter guitar, for those without the coordination to play more than two strings at once, but with too fat of fingers to play with two strings next to each other.

It's a violin for the Great Depression Band. In order to employ more people, FDR wrote in the New Deal that each instrument could only play a maximum of two different notes, so more people could be employed to make a full band. This band slowly died out since it was deathly boring to only get to play 2 notes during songs.

It is a guitar string tautness tester. Someone has to make sure that your new guitar strings won't snap as you tighten them.

I know, another music based answer. But...this is a picture of what was supposed to be dueling two-stringed dulcimers not dueling banjos in the movie 'Deliverance'.

Hi,
it is a "traceur de tartine", a device still used in very expensive hotels in France, the wires are connected, warm and slightly burn the bread, a french baguette cut in half lengthwise.
It helps to spread the jam really really straight.

It's clearly a duel tightrope set for the world's tiniest daredevils, twin fire ants called the Bold Benham Brothers from Bugsville! The tube in the middle lights up for added Flare :)

Hi !
This is an electric pole training set for young birds born in captivity.
They learn not to touch two wires, which is very dangerous on real power lines.
On the training set, they do not die, but are just a little tickled or exposed to Rebecca Black's "Friday" "song".
