What Is It? game 306

Now it's time for our collaboration with the awesome What Is It? Blog! What is this thing? You don't have to know to win!

Place your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, please, though you can enter as many as you'd like. You might know the true answer, but we're going to select two winners who come up with the funniest, most outlandish guesses to win a T-shirt from the NeatoShop. However...

Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don't include a selection, you forfeit the prize, okay? May we suggest the Science T-Shirt, Funny T-Shirt and Artist-Designed T-Shirts?

See more pictures of this strange thing at the What Is It? Blog. Good luck!

Update: it's an apple parer, corer, and slicer, patent number 122,553. Several people knew that, but we're looking for the funniest answers. Phil and Buster had a good one: "This, to me, looks like a bean extractor. The child is told the end-piece is a fragrant flower. Upon sniffing, the extractor is slowly inserted and rotated to acquire the bean. Once extracted, the child is usually left none the wiser." Once I realized he was talking about the child's nose instead of the ear, it made sense! Then marcintosh also had a great story about a prototype automobile that you need to go here to read. Both win T-shirts from the NeatoShop!

See all the answers for this week's What Is It? items at the What Is It? blog.

This is a device for removing the centers from Christmas assorted chocolates. Simply place the chocolate onto the tines, turn the crank and the outer layer of chocolate peels away, allowing the display of the inner core. Coconut and fruit centers may be immediately discarded, or shared with more pernicious holiday guests, while caramel and cream centres may be consumed immediately.

This is obviously an antique cat carrier. place the cat's face against the fan, the pronged screw... well you know. Anyway, it keeps your cat quiet and easily portable.

Not an apple corer. Its a 'Mandolin Tuner', invented by Victor Npoxpobk, who hated mandolin music. He actually passed himself off as a mandolin tuner until he was arrested for wanton destruction of private property. Died in a mental institution in Keiv, 1931. I think this picture comes from the National Mandolin conservatory in the same city.

It's a wheel winder. It was originally part of a failed attempt to make rubber band powered cars (i.e. horseless carriages.) A large rubber band stretched from the right rear wheel to the left rear wheel. You would have to connect the wheel wider to each wheel and wind the rubber band. Properly wound, a car could travel for almost a mile before needing to be rewound. It failed mostly because people were winding the wheels in opposite directions which resulted in the car spinning wildly on it's rear wheels. At that was the end for the Whirligig Motor Company.

This is a device used to test the blood sugar of diabetics. Unfortunately, it turned out to be extremely painful and only one was ever sold.....to Chuck Norris.

It is a WWII Era pineapple corer/slicer.
It's only issue is the ten seconds you have from pulling the pin.
Not many of these survived, nor many of their operators.

It's the Little Bertha tunneling machine used by enterprising prairie dogs. They hire out their services to the moles, gophers, groundhogs, rabbits, and other animals that are too lazy to dig their own tunnels or burrows.

A remenant of the Death Star, it was one of the devices on the torture droid that Vader used on Leia. Its specific purpose is just too frighening to utter.

Wait a sec... That's not an antique at all. It's one of them new non-polluting, environmentally-friendly outboard boat motors all the kids are talking about. You just clamp it onto the back of your boat and turn the crank. Go green!
