Meerkat Uses Friends as Her Pillow

YouTube Link

We all tend to feel comfortable when we know we're among friends, and this meerkat is no different. She's surrounded by friends, and so comfortable that she's downright sleepy  even if her friends are of the stuffed variety. Stuffed friends make for wonderful pillows, do they not? (We'll need to ask that question of another cute creature, because this one's pretty much out cold.) Via Laughing Squid

Bulldog is Over Working Out

YouTube Link

You know those days when you're definitely NOT in the mood to go to the gym? Or to go jogging, or on a brisk walk? When the couch and the remote control are calling your name ever so seductively? Well here's a pup who will understand the plight of anti-exercisers everywhere.

For some reason or another, this English bulldog's human thinks he should walk on the treadmill. But it's safe to say that the dog's not liking the idea whatsoever. I wonder what would happen if he went outside and saw a squirrel dart past him? Via Laughing Squid

Because He Can

(YouTube link)

What? This cat lets himself in by turning the door handle, like a human. Then he walks through the cat flap, like a cat. He could be confused, or he could be a creature of habit. Personally, I think he’s just showing off. -via Tastefully Offensive

Fluffy Cat and Cone of Shame

This poor cat has to deal with a cone and all that hair at once. At least we got a ridiculous photograph out of his misery. This was posted by redditor ANTIVAX_JUGGALETTE. What’s the funniest thing you can say about this picture? Here are some examples.

dustin_pledge: It looks like a furry water cooler.

SatNav: Don't let it out in the rain like that...

toketasticninja: "The lamp is running away!" - Grandpa Simpson

DickDover: I think there is something clogging your coffee filter.

Synchronized Dog Tail Wagging

(Video Link)

These two Basset Hounds from Jennie Hibbert's Maple Street Bassets start out at the same tempo, but alternating beats. They gradually blend their rhythms until they're wagging their tails synchronously. They look like two furiously fast-paced orchestra conductors.

Guinness and the Window Washer

Guinness the cat lives in a high-rise apartment building. The highlight of his week (or however often the windows are washed) is when the window washer comes by. The guy like Guinness, too, and plays with him a little through the glass.

There’s a whole series of these encounters between Guinness and his window washer friend at Tastefully Offensive.

Cat Helps End Police Standoff

Officers of the California Highway Patrol pulled over car on Wednesday in San Francisco. The police determined that the vehicle had been stolen, and the driver fled from the scene. The unnamed suspect jumped a fence and into a two-story building. He perched on the ledge of a second-floor window and threatened to jump. San Francisco police climbed a fire escape to negotiate with him, and set up mats on the ground beneath him. The standoff lasted several hours. But the turning point was when they brought in the man’s kitty.

The suspect’s cat was brought to the scene by family, Gatpandan said.

The cat “assisted” with “negotiating” the suspect off the ledge, according to Gatpandan, and the cat’s presence was “paramount” in getting him down safely.

The suspect eventually climbed back through the window and into police custody. You can see more pictures from the standoff at the San Francisco Chronicle. -via Buzzfeed

Helpful Dogs Tote in the Groceries

The human is back from a productive hunting trip. She found plenty of game that will help keep the pack well-fed, including carrots, onions, celery, and laundry detergent.

(Video Link)

YouTube user Bianca Richter reports that her dogs are helpful this way. Some, though, are more enthusiastic than others. Perhaps the two layabouts will not get to use the detergent.

Yes, That's a Hamster Walking on a Leash

And all of our lives are better for it. We need more hamsters walking out in the world to bring smiles to our faces. You can find more videos of this one posted by Twitter user @born_okss. They show Pico, our newest little friend. His leash seems light enough that it doesn't give him any trouble.

Zack the Golden Retriever Buys His Own Ice Cream

YouTube Link

Youtuber John Hubble's golden retriever Zack is the consummate shopper. Give that pup money and he knows just how to spend it — on ice cream, of course! Hubble hands over the cash and Zack carefully totes it in his mouth over to the ice cream truck, where the ice cream man is happy to oblige and give Zack his goodies. Zack loves the process so much, it's hard to tear him away from the truck! Now that's a canine after my own heart. Via Arbroath

Kago and Kumbali, the Perfect Pairing of a Puppy and Cheetah Cub

YouTube Link

Staff at the Richmond Zoo quickly took over when two-week-old cheetah Kumbali's mother wasn't producing enough milk for him to thrive. After the keepers' bottle feeding regimen was successful, the cub needed to be socialized. That's when he was introduced to a rescue puppy they named Kago. Kumbali and Kago, now inseparable, have formed a sibling-like bond. Watch this adorable pair romp and play in this footage. Via Uproxx

Little Bird Plays with Paper Towel

If only we could all find such joy in simple things! To be fair, I don’t know if hopping around really indicates joy, but Little Bird sure keeps coming back for more.

(YouTube link)

Little Bird (yes, that’s his name) is a 2-year old caique. That’s a kind of parrot I’d never heard of before. If you have one, maybe you should give him a paper towel. It will make his day. -via Arbroath

The Rolling of Domestic Cats

The following is an article from The Annals of Improbable Research.

by Marc Abrahams, Improbable Research staff

Domestic cats roll. Oh, they roll and roll and roll—not constantly, but often enough that the behavior eventually caught the attention of scientists. In 1994, Hilary N. Feldman of Cambridge University’s Sub-Department of Animal Behaviour did a formal study of the phenomenon. Feldman’s monograph, called “Domestic Cats and Passive Submission,” appeared in the journal Animal Behaviour.

Other scientists had made little leaping swats at the question. Feldman commends J.M. Baerends-Van Roon and G.P. Baerends’ book The Morphogenesis of the Behaviour of the Domestic Cat, and also L.K. Corbett’s University of Aberdeen Ph.D. thesis, “Feeding ecology and social organization of wildcats (Felis silvestris) and domestic cats (Felis catus) in Scotland.” Both came out in 1979, marking that year as the previous high point in cat-rolling scholarship.

But Baerends-Van Roon, Baerends, and Corbett only glanced at rolling. Feldman focused on it, and spent six months observing “two groups of semiferal cats kept in a large outdoor enclosure.”
