This Dog Can Sign His Own Name

Jumpy, a Border Collie, can do anything! He's remarkably smart for a dog and proves it by incredible stunts, such as riding a skateboard, walking on his front paws through a cone weave, writing for a popular blog while disguised as a human, and riding a scooter.

He can even write his own name! Omar van Muller, Jumpy's owner and trainer, hands him a paintbrush and directs the dog through impressive penmanship.

Ferret in Fence Flummoxed Firefighters

This ferret was found hopelessly tangled in a fence in Ossett, West Yorkshire, UK. last week. He had gotten caught in his midsection. But instead of backing out, he tried returning to the other side through another opening in the fence, leaving him stuck in two places. The RSPCA couldn’t free him, so they called the fire brigade. Firefighters cut a section of the fence around the ferret. The ferret was taken, fence and all, to Abbey House Veterinary Hospital.

Vet Laura Smith, who treated Whoops, said: “This was such an unusual situation, I’ve never seen anything like it. I think Whoops had gone through the fence and got stuck, but instead of backing out he had turned and gone the other way and become even more stuck.”

“It was easy enough to carefully ease his head out of the first bar, but the second was firmly stuck around his middle as he is really quite a chubby ferret! Between me and vet nurses Gillian Kerrod and Candice Dyson, we managed to cut him out completely once he was anaesthetised. All in all it took around 15 minutes, and after we monitored him overnight he was doing so well we released him back to the RSPCA to take him to a rehoming centre.”

The ferret, now named “Whoops,” is up for adoption through South Cheshire Ferret Rescue. -via Arbroath

White Tail Buck Battle

YouTube Link

Since it's Christmas (and in collusion with Arbroath), I'll imagine that these two Colorado white tail bucks going through rutting season are actually reindeer at the North Pole, fighting for the right to lead Santa's backup sleigh (helmed by senior-level elves). In the end, the two run off, since one elf decides that they can both be on the sleigh team. It sure is fun, living in my delusional yet festive Christmas day bubble! Via Arbroath

This Cat Refuses To Wear His Christmas Neck Tie

Pets don't feel the need to wear clothes, and therefore don't get the idea of dressing up for the holidays.

But their goofy humans are always trying to get them to change their animalistic ways and go legit, which often results in an interspecies standoff.

I think Jazzy the cat has the right idea about fancy holiday attire, but he'd better not take his protesting too far or he may end up without any vittles on Christmas!

Couple Sets Up A Christmas Dinner Table For Dogs

Many people think of their pets as a part of the family, but some go a step further and see their pets as the babies they (thankfully) never had, treating them like humans in the most ridiculous ways possible.

They dress them up, take them to restaurants and order them meals, treating their dogs and cats better than they treat most humans.

But ironically named Kelly and Zach Furr from Versailles, Kentucky are taking the pet love a step Furr-ther this Christmas by setting a "kids" table for their dog and his puppy pals.

These dogs are living far more comfortably than many people I know!

Science Explains Why Cats Are Always Knocking Over Our Stuff

 photo eb751f44ebc5b453a2d452ae302098f4_zpsalsp2k3x.gif

Cats are nimble and said to always land on their feet, with extremely quick reflexes and the ability to squeeze into any space where they can fit their whiskers.

They're obviously not clumsy animals, so why are they always knocking stuff off our tables? Are they actually just being jerks, mocking their humans by breaking our stuff?

(YouTube Link)

Scientifically speaking the answer is no, and according to research done by Katherine Houpt, a professor of veterinary behavior at Cornell University, cats knock over our stuff to get our attention.

They also like to swat stuff off tables because of their predatory instinct to strike with their paws, so the swatting could actually be seen as a kind of training exercise for hunting. And Pretty soon they'll be hunting for a new place to live if they keep knocking stuff over!

Clever Dog Switches Place in Line to Get Extra Treats

(Video Link)

The pooch on the end has reasoned out a pattern: the human delivers treats along a line. All that he has to do is switch places in the line to get extra treats. He can keep this going all day--especially with treats to keep him fueled.

What kind of dogs are these? They book a bit like Shelties and a bit like Border Collies.

Jedi Cat Training

Now that we are in the middle of a record-breaking Star Wars weekend, it seems everyone wants to learn how to be a Jedi. Only a select few will learn from the oldest and wisest Jedi master.

Tiny Kitten Rescued Seconds Before Certain Death in Compressor at Recycling Plant

This tiny kitten was undoubtedly the luckiest in the state of California on Tuesday when its life was saved in its last seconds by a quick thinking workman at a recycling plant in Galt.

Tony Miranda is in charge of sorting the recyclables and was doing just that when he caught sight of the kitten about to run into a compressor. He was able to reach her just in time.

Workers at the plant believe that the kitten arrived via garbage truck and had already survived a tractor pushing her onto a conveyor belt and a several-foot-fall onto a second belt.

“We put so much material in here and we run so much stuff through it. It’s just amazing to see a little kitty survive through all this. It made my day... definitely made my day,” Miranda told KCRA.

Watch as Mountain Goats are Airlifted to Alternate Locations via Helicopter

YouTube Link

Mountain goats were placed in the state of Utah in the latter part of the 1960s. Since intially introduced, their numbers skyrocketed from a population of six to over 2,000. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources' method of relocation via helicopter keeps the goat populations steady and controlled.

Nets are shot at the goats, they are captured and strapped into harnesses and then they are relocated to preferable locations. The airlifting process is not harmful to the animals, and has been found to be safer than shooting them with tranquilizers. Veterinarians are on site during the relocation process to ensure the goats are safe and healthy. Via Gizmodo

Elliot Eats a Box

Elliot the cat really enjoys a good box. He received this box on September 10th, and he went to town on it immediately. But he was in no hurry to finish it off. It took three months to eat it all!

(YouTube link)

By December 16th, the box had completely disappeared. Elliot’s human caught the mayhem with the 1 Second Everyday app, which edits large amounts of video into time-lapse-like sequences. I hope Elliot gets a new box for Christmas.  -via Tastefully Offensive
