Chewbacca the Newborn Calf Rescued from Thin Ice

YouTube Link

A three-day-old calf named Chewbacca got an early lesson in the dangers of winter when he slipped in between the planks of a wooden fence and escaped from his enclosure, later stranding himself on a pond covered with thin ice. But Chewbacca, a resident of Hope, Indiana, was saved by the quick action of his owner Kevin Mahoney, who enlisted the help of his local police department when the rope with which he first tried to rescue the calf was too short.

After the police arrived with a rope long enough to pull the calf to safety, Chewbacca's anxious mama made the adorable move of jumping over a barrier to get her to her baby. She had waited long enough to warm and comfort the little calf, and took the tail end of the rescue into her own hooves. Via Arbroath

Punk Rock and Metal Cats Decked Out in Vests

Self-expression is a huge part of the punk and metal scene and sharing your favorite bands and other interests on your vest or jacket is one of the best ways to express yourself. Of course, just because these scenes are mostly made up of humans, that doesn't mean cats don't know how to rock just as hard.

Over at both Buzzfeed and Metal Sucks, there are a few great collections of punk and metal kitties decked out in their most rocking vests. They sure look cute, but with their vests and attitudes, these cats aren't to be messed with.

Heavy-Sleeping Cat Won't Wake up, No Matter How Many Mice Crawl on Her

Mimo the cat is asleep. And when she sleeps, she's totally out. So the first mouse crawls over her. There's no response. More mice come out to play . . .

. . . and Mimo doesn't notice! Eventually, 21 mice climb on top of Mimo, who doesn't stir.

They should use this time for something more productive, such as raiding the cheese supply!

Mother Elephant Shields Her Baby from Humans

YouTube Link

Though I love most animals, elephants are one of my favorite species, in part because of their intelligence, compassion, and frequent expressions of love to their herds and families. An example is this cautious elephant mother who unfortunately is aware of reasons that it's best to keep her baby beyond trunk's length from strange humans. In this sweet clip, she extends her trunk to gently hold the baby back from a group of tourists approaching them on the road near Malelane in Kruger National Park in South Africa. Via Daily Dot

Reddit Photoshop Battle: This Rather Smug Looking Goat

Original Image: THE Picture of Goat Defiance

It could be Kim Jong-Un bending over. Perhaps it has to do with Kim Kardashian's latter (and fatter) parts. It could have to do with Putin's chesty breastal regions. Or it may just be a goat. The goat above, in fact. Some think this little guy's expression says "smug." Some think it's proud. Personally, I think it vaguely resembles a goat version of success kid (one of my favorite memes).

Just how Redditors interpret the goat's countenance is currently being expressed in a Reddit photoshop battle thread. The results are rich; a few are pictured here. Check them all out at Reddit. Via Daily Dot

Who’s a Good Dog?

Did you notice a theme developing in our feature banner at the top of the blog this week? We had dogs with degrees, research on dogs barking, Marilyn Monroe’s dogs, and even corn dogs. And now that we’ve made it to the end of Dog Week at Neatorama, it’s time for something just plain silly. We are going to examine the phenomena of The Good Dog. Who’s a good dog? We ask our dogs that all the time, and them, being dogs, just have no idea.

Hot New Thing: Yoga with Bunnies

Out: yoga with cats and dogs. In: yoga with rabbits! Metro News reports that Sunberry Fitness in Richmond, British Columbia, recently held classes in which people performed yoga while rabbits hopped around the studio.

The studio offered these classes in conjunction with Bandaids for Bunnies, a local rabbit rescue charity. Their goal was to offer a new yoga experience and get some of the rabbits adopted into good homes. The first two classes sold out and there’s a waiting list for future classes.

Couple Find Strange Black "Walking" Fish In New Zealand Bay

People come across odd animals all the time, posting the photographic evidence online and sparking a wave of discussion about what the heck that animal in the pic actually is.

Most of the time these critters end up being nothing more than deformed or otherwise genetically defective, but sometimes their discovery is actually an important biological breakthrough.

A couple in New Zealand found a strange black fish while snorkeling in the Bay of Islands near Auckland, the fish seemingly "walking" along the ocean floor.

They caught the fish and sent it to researcher Andrew Stewart from the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa so he could study it and tell them what they'd found.

Andrew came to the conclusion that the bizarre black fish is actually a rare variation of the striated frogfish, but Andrew was amazed by the fish's jet black coloration considering they're normally brightly colored and boldly striped.

Now the black sheep of the frogfish world is part of the Te Papa collection, where they'll study it to discover whether the black coloration is an evolutionary adaptation or merely a mutation.

Simon's Cat Logic: Crazy Time

Simon Tofield, the animator behind Simon’s Cat, talks with Nicky Trevorrow, a cat behavior expert at Cats Protection about why our furballs do the odd things they do, specifically the sudden craziness. You’ve seen your cat switch off his senses and explode in a flurry of activity like a scalded haint. That’s crazy time.

(YouTube link)

Better yet, Trevorrow gives us tips on how to help cats release that energy in a more productive way. Tofield is beginning a new series of videos called Cat Logic. Future episodes will explore other cat behaviors that seem incomprehensible to us mere humans. -via Tastefully Offensive

Two Tough Lizards Take Their Scrap To The Street

Lizard gangs like to take their rumbles right to the middle of the street, so all the wimpy humans watching the fight will see how tough they are and leave them alone.

But only one lizard gang lord can rule the block, and as this video shows it can take quite a while for the king lizard to come out on top!

(YouTube Link)

Sadly, this epic battle was ignored by virtually every human who passed by, but the guy who decided to capture the whole thing on video is now under the protection of the South Side Saurians.

Common Plants That Can Be Deadly For Pets

Pet owners often assume their cats and dogs will instinctively know which plants are safe to eat and which ones are toxic.

But for some reason domesticated animals will chew on just about anything if given the chance, including common plants that are actually pure poison for pets.

If your cat likes to hang out on the counter they might be enticed by that beautiful bouquet of lilies you bring home, but lilies can cause kidney failure in cats and ingestion is fatal if not treated within 18 hours.

(Image Link)

The sap from both the elephant ear and dumb cane plants can be fatal if ingested, and if the sap gets into your cat's eyes while it's prowling around they can get mighty infected.

Learned that one the hard way, and lemme tell ya- it's no fun trying to hold your cat down and give them eye drops!

Those beautiful foxgloves that sprout up all over the place are poisonous to both pets and people, but your pets probably won't notice them until you bring them inside, so leave them in the yard where they belong!
